A different form of racing

All this talk over which is the most difficult form of motorsports reminded me about a new type of racing thats been emerging in the offroad world.

“King of the Hammers” started in 2008, but grew tremendously for the 2009 race. It takes place in Johnson Valley, CA at a popular offroad trail “The Hammers” Its a time trial type of event, with a staggered start but there is a ton of passing that happens. If you break or get stuck in a narrow canyon, expect to get driven OVER

Alot of these rigs are homebuilt, but admittedly with large budgets. It takes alot of skill to make a rig go fast in the desert, but still able to rock crawl some of the hardest obstacles in the US.

I plan on heading out to spectate for 2010. I got a buddy that lives about an hour from there, so it should be a cheap trip.

nasty, I have always wanted to build something for that type of fun. But there is nothing around here.

pretty cool. Auto-x is much sicker though

:rofl

Awesome shit. It’s definitely a cool sport to watch in this format.

Rock crawling in general has exploded over the past five years. Some of those machines are approaching six figure builds.

Definitely cool.
I’ve always thought rock crawling was sweet.

ha, thats pretty awesome. some of those arent even cars anymore, theyre built from the ground up arent they?

i dont think they were ever cars…

still cool nonetheless :thumbup

i think i saw remnants of a wrangler among the tubing on one of those rigs.

theres a few production based rigs in there. Even a couple formula toyotas which are based off old 4 runners, and still use leaf springs front and rear.
