Adam Carolla may get his own car show after all.

OK, so you don’t like Top Gear USA… apparently, neither does Adam Carolla, and Speed may give him a comparable program:

What happens when a spurned funnyman, a Pulie-winning automotive scribbler, an ex-NBA star and an online video impresario with the facial hair of a Civil War colonel bring the heat to a much-maligned automotive TV show? It’s anyone’s guess.

The as-yet untitled new Speed TV show—described as “Top Gear” meets Fox Sports’ “The Best Damn Sports Show Period”—will star Carolla, Wall Street Journal auto writer Dan Neil, John “Spider” Salley of the '96 Chicago Bulls (and TBDSSP), and Matt Farah, the sideburn’d host of online video program “The Smoking Tire.”

If you’ll recall, Carolla hosted NBC’s attempt at porting the UK’s “Top Gear” to the US, which resulted in a pilot or two but nothing that ever aired. Variety reporst that the show will feature news and conversation about cars and pre-recorded features shot on the road, like “Top Gear.”

Moving past the headline-generating Adam Carolla, we’ve long been fans of Dan Neil, and John Salley was rather good on The Best Damn Sports Show Period. Finally, Farah has carved out a nice niche and has garnered a fan base of his own on The Smoking Tire.

Cast is interesting, and since it’s not a “Top Gear” spin-off, they won’t have to live under that stigma. I’m always interested in more car-based TV. Now we’ll have a second automotive show to watch, a la Fifth Gear to UK’s TG.

described as “Top Gear” meets Fox Sports’ “The Best Damn Sports Show Period”

That worries me.

I’d watch it. Carolla is definitely funny

Carolla is a car guy as well though. I think he’ll have the passion a show will need. Now if I could only get past his face… and voice…

I really hope it is more a combination of “The Man Show” and “Top Gear”. I’d watch that.

Hmm…

I’d probably watch this over Top Gear USA

My vote still goes to Jerry and Jay.

I was holding out hope that Carolla would just Rutledge on Top Gear USA, but this could work too…

anything is better than top gear usa, that shit is mad gay

Farah is actually a huge car guy (he has a gutted z05) and is very entertaining. Instead of the US having our own Top Gear vs Fifth Gear battle, I’d rather see History keep Tanner and add Matt Farah and Adam Corolla.

And don’t think the conversational segments will be boring. Carolla makes a living making people laugh without ever preparing a joke or writing one down. The hosts aren’t one-tick ponies; knowledgeable about cars with zero personality (Merry Xmas Motor Week) or all jokes with no experience (Like, oh I dunno, a comedian reviewing an SLS.) These guys have the knowledge us enthusiasts require and the humor and wit to keep us interested.

Siqqqq burn :tspry:

I like this guy already

As it turns out, Speed is pumping some serious loot into it’s original programming.

SPEED™ LAUNCHING MOST AGGRESSIVE PRIME TIME PROGRAMMING INITIATIVE IN NETWORK HISTORY

CAR WARRIORS HEADLINES SIX TITLES SLATED FOR FEBRUARY PREMIERES;
NEARLY 20 NEW SHOWS IN DIFFERENT PHASES OF DEVELOPMENT

THE FAST & THE FURIOUS DIRECTOR COHEN TAKES ON
‘GYMKHANA’ PROJECT FOR SPEED

There is nothing subtle about the approach SPEED is taking to upgrade its prime time weeknight programming lineup as the network rolls toward its 15th anniversary on the air, with nearly 20 projects in different phases of development, six already slated for early 2011 premieres.

“SPEED has a history of success with original enthusiast programming,” said network president Hunter Nickell. “We are aggressively communicating with the production community, teaming with some of the biggest names in the category as we develop the 2011 weekday prime time lineup.”

To that end, SPEED is enlisting famed director/producer Rob Cohen (The Fast & The Furious) to executive produce a pilot on the mesmerizing motorsports spectacle of Gymkhana, a high-octane blend of racing and automotive ballet. Plans are to begin production on the pilot in January and premiere the series on SPEED in the summer of 2011.

In addition, SPEED has secured funny man and car lover Adam Carolla to host a pilot, is in talks with late-night mainstay and certified gearhead Jay Leno on a selection of specials and is teaming with Sony and Nissan on a reality series based on the red-hot new video game, Gran Turismo 5.

SPEED, now available in more than 77 million U.S. homes after adding more than 2.5 million since last December, also has commissioned demos from producers of the hit show Wipeout, as well as for a potential series entitled Come Drive with Me from Great Britain’s Granada TV, producers of Come Dine with Me.

Beginning the week of Feb. 21, SPEED is launching six new titles following its highly rated coverage of NASCAR’s season-opening Speedweeks events from Daytona Beach:

(Note: The list below identifies working titles that may change by air time)

Car Warriors (Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET, 60 minutes) – Produced by BASE Productions (Sports Science, Jesse James is a Dead Man, Megacities), this hyper-charged automotive build show will pit a team of eight “all-star” builders against a team of average Joes from local garages in a 72-hour challenge to turn a basic car into a work of art. Judges include iconic car designer George Barris, hot rod craftsman Jimmy Shine and electronics wizard Mad Mike Martin.

American Trucker (Thursdays at 10 and 10:30 p.m. ET, two 30-minute episodes) – Produced by BCII Productions (Overhaulin’, Livin’ the Low Life, Payback, Hot Rod TV) and hosted by designer/artist and fanatical truck expert Rob Mariani, a finalist on HGTV’s Design Star, this new show introduces the audience to iconic trucks, the famous routes they followed and the cargo missions that made history.

Car Science (Wednesdays at 10 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. ET, two 30-minute episodes) – The producers of the popular franchise series Sports Science and Fight Science bring a mad-cap scientific approach to the world of automobiles.

Speedmakers (Thursday at 9 p.m. ET, 60 minutes) – Produced by Michael Hoff Productions (Ultimate Factories, Mega Structures, Ghost Detectives), Speed Makers takes a look at the iconic builders and epic innovators of acceleration. From celebrated mega-structures like Daytona International Speedway to behind the scenes at Aston Martin, this show celebrates the masterminds of engineering power.

Ticket to Ride with Dan Neil (Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. ET) – Pulitzer Prize-winning Wall Street Journal automotive writer Dan Neil takes viewers inside the business of cars, offering insightful test drives, interviews and commentary with a trademark wit that has made Neil a must-read for car lovers.

The 10 (Wednesday at 8 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. ET, two 30-minute episodes) – A fast-paced list program, highlighting the best of the best from the world of NASCAR. First season topics include Most Bizarre Finishes, Throw-downs, Talladega Moments, All-Time Races, Closest Calls and Earnhardt Moments.

In 2011, SPEED’s Monday-Sunday NASCAR coverage continues to anchor the network, with NASCAR Race Hub (Monday-Thursday at 7 p.m. ET) and several new programs in development. Weekend programming continues to be loaded with live racing coverage from the worlds of NASCAR, Formula One, Grand American Road Racing, AMA Supercross, MotoGP, ARCA and others, as well as industry leading motor sports news programs Wind Tunnel with Dave Despain and The SPEED Report.

Cliffs: Right now, Speed has 20 new shows in development and six will drop in 2011.

SPEED’s original programing sucks so bad, I bet all these new shows will continue this trend.

Bump.

Obviously, he got the show, and it aired last night. I watched, anyone else?

I liked it. There were some pretty funny moments, they made fun of themselves saying the show was going to get cancelled, and they raced LeMons with a 300ZX, which they later destroyed with AR15s and an AK. GT3 RS in a standing mile run was cool, sounded amazing.

Then they drove around in a RR Ghost, which Carolla farted in and told the world it sucked. lol.

I really don’t know why John Salley is on this show (he said maybe four words), but just him laughing like an ass made me laugh. It was awkward - it’s the pilot, get over it - but overall I liked this. 110% better than episode 1 of TGUSA.

Hmm. Sounds interesting.

No sign of it on the newsgroups yet, which is surprising. Top Gear and Top Gear USA are uploaded within an hour of airing.

EDIT: Not on pirate bay either. Looks like no one gives a shit about this show.

It was alright. I guess it could get better.
Was John Salley on there just as someone you want to hate (hates leather because it kills cows and likes his Toyota Carrolla)? I would drop him and keep the other 3.

Watched, thought it was terrible.

question though? is NORMALLY ASPIRATED a term? they used this and i never heard anyone use that to describe N/A

If so does that mean that my car is ABNORMALLY aspirated?

Looks like Speed is replaying it a bunch this week. Just set up the remote dvr to record it at 10am today on SpeedHD. Sounds like I’m going to be disappointed though.
