Carolla fits because he’s a blowhard with everyman appeal, he rails against the same sorts of things Clarkson does (albeit with less wit, but he’s still funny).
To make Top Gear USA work, you need to start with Dan Neil, add in Larry Webster and finish with some Hollywood pretty boy with some car cred…say, Jason Priestley. But only if the hosts get along and have some kind of camraderie. And most importantly, it has to be Neil’s show first and foremost, like Top Gear is Clarkson’s show.
I figured out that I have a channel called BBC in America and they play alotttt of top gear so I am pumpppped.
I think the show will fail if it tries to mimic it too much, like Top Gear Aus. did, it doesn’t feel natural, characters as you said will be key however.
