Any flac and linux users?

Just found out about this project: mp3fs

From the website http://mp3fs.sourceforge.net/:

MP3FS is A read-only FUSE filesystem which transcodes audio formats (currently FLAC) to MP3 on the fly when opened and read.

Just set this up, literally in 5min, so some co-workers could download some music and I must say it is fucking tits…

what?

if on computer, why not just play the flac. If on ipod you can use rockbox to play them…

I must be missing something that makes it cool to play flac to mp3

why would u transcode lossless to mp3?

A lot of players don’t support lossless.

Edit: Actually, this is pretty cool. You could have a master copy of your music in lossless and make the FUSE’d directory available across the network for the players that don’t support lossless. I wonder what the overhead would be on that.

then use a player than does.

  1. if you can’t listen at flac whats the point of downloading it as flac

1.1) Larger on harddrive
1.2) Longer to download

  1. why make the quality shittier…

exactly, why dl flac in the first place.

For example, if I want to stream my collection to my xbox I don’t need to have two copies of every song, one in flac and one in mp3, which would take up even more hard drive space.

If I wanted to I could create another FUSE mount with a lower quality mp3 for streaming music.

I haven’t noticed any overhead.

just use WMA, better quality than mp3 anyways. plus u can stream them.

ehh nm, i see what ur doing now.

WMA in linux? do-able but yeah i don’t think so…

XBMC supports flac
