Pionner DEH-P8400MP
Long story short, I snapped the shifter in the Miata, and my hand kept going on the 2-3, and I punched the radio.
Now it won’t work. It’s still getting power, as the faceplate opens, however, it won’t turn on. I thought maybe it was the ribbon cable that connects the faceplate to the unit, so I bought a new one from Pioneer, no dice.
So, I really have no idea otherwise. Nothing is noticably burnt, but there’s some “glue” looking stuff around certain parts of the faceplate circuit board. I have no idea if it’s related to my problem, but I figured I’d ask. I just don’t have the extra money at the moment for another head unit, so I’m trying to avoid going that route.
Note that in the pics, the “glue” is near/on the “Source” button, which is essentially the power button.
Any help?

The ‘glue’ looks like burned flux. Is it fresh? or has it hardened?
Don’t know if the burned flux would be a problem? At least not from being punched?
Have you looked into just replacing the faceplate? You might be able to find one on e-bay.
Unless the solder joint cracked or anything I don’t see that flux causing a problem.
I don’t see the burnt flux directly as a problem either. If it was fresh, I would suspect it was burned by a short circuit, possibly in the switch after being punched. If it is hardened it may have been there for quite some time - most likely during manufacturing.
Not much more help from me unless I could prod it with a multimeter.
8400 is a good headunit
Give me a yell if you end up wanting to get a new one.

That’s the whole problem. I really like it, but faceplates are 110 new from Pioneer, and like 80 used on eBay. I’m trying to see if I can find a broken one with a good faceplate, or just something else older but high end (and cheap.)
You work at Best Buy, right? Any good sales right now?
yea there is all kind of shit going on… the newest/coolest deck right now is the ones with bluetooth built in to it. you can transer mp3’s wirelessly from your cell straight to the deck and get calls and shit…
Talking with the Guff the other night, I thought of something - I hit the thing pretty fucking hard, maybe it has a hairline crack in it; sure enough, it does, and it severed some connections.
So, I’m going to call a buddy’s brother tonight to see if he can repair it. He’s a computer engineer and built his own sound card and shit, so hopefully he can fix a few connections for me
Crack is too thin to be captured on the digi, but at least now I know it’s 99% the faceplate causing the problem, so even if he can’t repair it, I can wait for one to come up on eBay.
