You’re confusing Subaru’s on-demand 4WD system with AWD. It was in 1987 that the 4WD system became true AWD.
Here’s a link for you to read up:
http://www.drive.subaru.com/SubaruDrive-Sum02/AWD-Demystified.asp
1974
Subaru introduces the first “On-Demand” four-wheel drive system for passenger vehicles.
1978
47 percent of all Subaru vehicles sold in the U.S. have four-wheel drive.
1984
Subaru becomes the first and only manufacturer to offer four-wheel drive across its entire model line.
1987
The Subaru four-wheel drive system evolves into All-Wheel Drive. The design eliminates the need for driver interaction by automatically varying the amount of power delivered to each of the four wheels.
And: http://www.cars101.com/subaru/subaru_history.html
> 1986 full time All Wheel Drive offered on certain models, the part time system available through 1989. > 1987 Subaru offers All-Wheel-Drive (awd) automatically varying the power delivered to wheels (Audi's Quattro system introduced in 1980).Subaru is NOT the first car company with AWD. However the rest of your information seems accurate.
Good info… I stand corrected.
All good, good to see someone new that posts car-related stuff here…haha.
Nice find
its an illusion.
I like it.
sweet
don u beat me to it. audi introduced the first car with a center differential allowing it to have true full time AWD in 1980.
