Really cool project that I have been looking forward to. 900Mhz serves quite a great place to land some communication talk between endpoints while allowing them to share internet connections. Strange to see it just vanish and such silence seems like big brother didn’t want it in place.
Defcon/black hat season it’s pretty common to see talks get pulled like this.
pretty stoked this year teaching 4 days at blackhat
My boss has a really crazy story from working on a PSIRT team and pulling a talk the night before due to major vulnerability disclosure that hadn’t gotten worked out. Went through the ringer to pull the talk, cut the description out programs, reprint handouts, etc… and the dude still hosed them and gave the talk. Went on stage, said “fuck it I quit” and disclosed a major vulnerability that hadn’t yet been patched.
Maybe the dude will go rogue and leak the code to this somehow.
What are you teaching @LZ ?
Talks get pulled but there usually is more info about it. Someone so involved with this project just went silent and has been vague about it. Even the parent company noted has no mention of the project like it never existed.
I would expect for talks to get pulled due to Vulnerability Disclosure issues … this one definitely seems suspicious.
SECURITY DEFENSES - SECRET PENETRATION TESTING TECHNIQUES at Blackhat with Dave Kennedy and team
A lot of times they get slapped with gag orders by other companies or huge legal threats and you never hear about it for a year+
OT: What did you guys think of the movie Blackhat?
As a movie blackhat sucked some of the technical stuff was factual.
If you’re into hacking Mr robot is a pretty sweet show
I only watch CSI: Cyber. That is the realest show I have seen in a long time.
What would you use to connect to a 900mhz wifi network? 802.11ah isnt available yet as far as I know…
900mhz is the peer to peer connection, not the wifi. You are essentially using the spectrum to connect a client on your laptop to the base station allowing you to be up to 40 miles away if the line of sight works. The wifi would be your client to the ProxyHam or the proxy ham to the base wifi network.
Laptop->ProxyHam-> 900 mhz <-ProxyHam<-Internet Router/Wifi network
And holy hell proxy gambit went nuts with wires. You can do this with a Pi and the 900mhz adapter and have 100% less cables. Lol.
