BMW to come out with a few more M models... And they're diesel.

BMW’s M Division may have started out with a raspy, fighty little petrol 3 Series, but today it stands for something more. Much more. Say hello to the birth of the 3.0-litre triple-turbo straight six diesel M car.

BMW recently revealed its intention to create a new range of M-tuned cars that would sit between the standard range and the ‘proper’ M cars, and today we find out that on launch, the brand will offer a four-wheel-drive BMW M550d and M550d Touring, a BMW X5 M50d and a BMW X6 M50d.

They might have been borne in the fires of the original M535i way back in the eighties, but today’s star is a different kind of six. That new 3.0-litre diesel packs three turbochargers: two small ones and a larger turbo. The lower inertia of the smaller turbos is used to deliver “razor-sharp responses” according to BMW, while the larger one is tuned for maximum pressure when you really feel like opening the taps.

As a result, it produces 381bhp and 546lb ft of torque. In the M550d XDrive, that equates to a 0-62mph time of 4.7 seconds (the new M5 does it in 4.4), a top speed of 155mph, a combined mpg of 44.8mpg and emissions of just 165g/km. Naturally the SUVs emit more (199/204 g/km for the X5 and X6), but acceleration is only blunted by up to half a second. Whichever way you look at it, it’s fast.

BMW UK has confirmed we’ll only get this triple turbo engine in the X5 and X6 - meaning no M550d for us - but all will feature an eight-speed sports auto and M-specific tuning of the suspension, bodyshell mounting, engine and transmission mounting, springs, dampers, chassis control systems and mapping for the hydraulic steering. As close to a full-blooded M car as you can get without widening the track and flaring the arches…

As expected, you get M design cues, a range of 19in and 20in wheel options, lots of leather, aluminium and Alcantara for the interior and a dizzying array of driver assistance systems.

So there you have it: BMW’s first ever diesel-powered M car. Do you embrace this new direction with a whoop and a high-five, or does the thought of the M Division making an oil burner turn your stomach?

If we get them, I’d be interested to see how the M550d will do price wise. Pretty good performance stats, although the MPG in the article is rated on the Euro cycle, not the EPA rating we have which will be significantly lower I believe.

Finally.

Diesel is #FTW and it’s about time we start getting a bigger share of EU market.

Motors last longer, resale is higher and MPG that is great, no idea why we didn’t get them sooner except…

The problem here is the stigma of dieseles being for big rig trucks and redneck trucks. Few want a luxury car that has a ticking noise. Maybe the fact that one can barely tell its a diesel with BMW’s and engine noise will help the sales.

Wonder what Marat would say.

We need better Diesel infrastructure…

and bmw falls deeper and deeper away from its roots with the m division,
just basically focused around making money instead of preserving its racing heritage…

i could see some idiot putting regular unleaded into his brand new diesel beemer.

Happens all of the time with all types of vehicles except BMW. All diesel BMWs sold here can not fit an unleaded pump into the nozzle. Neg rep to you for being ignant.

Says the guy with a convertible, automatic M3.

:lol

Every diesel vehicle has a different hole size as the nozzle on the pumps is different size too.

Still doesn’t stop people from putting regular into diesel and vice versa, even if they hold it outside to let it in.

Seen it many times.

you are really trying hard to come up with bullshit excuses to neg rep me, arent you?
i let the comedian thread neg slide because you werent the first to do it, benny was, and benny’s an asshole.
i dont even know what i got neg’d for the second time.
and you neg me here because i didn’t know that diesel BMWs have a different sized fuel filler hole?
that’s a bit much…

Don’t make me neg you again. Cuz I’ll do it.

Negged

yeah thanks. jerkoff.

Benny is an asshole?

occasionally.

retarded statement is retarded ^

there’s no automatic m’s in e46 body style … maybe your referring to smg which is cool and all but i have a 6 spd vert m3 and a 6pd m5

lol is on you

At the end of the day, your M3 is still a convertible. Racing heritage? Who are you to mock BMWs marketing and sales team when you fell for it and bought a convertible M3?

SMG is automatic, whether you like to think it is or not.
“BMW offered a system simply called “sequential manual gearbox” (SMG) on the E36 M3, and later “SMG-II” on the E46 M3. The BMW SMG transmission has both automatic and manual shift modes. Inside the different modes there are different programmes, with six settings to control the upshift/downshift speed for manual operation, and five settings for automatic mode.”

^ lol

i am a consumer whom will not be purchasing a a m diesel of any sort.

the fact that my m3 is convertible ruins the car yeah i hear ya but you have the same car with a roof making yours only more rigid and lighter by 400lb or something close to that but otherwise … its the same and your comparing that ( weight difference of 400lb and rigidity ) to bmw making diesels and putting the m name plate on it?

yeah you have the hardcore race car with the weight difference and the rigidity but i think i make up half your weight compared to my weight so i guess its even besides rigidity

this is my 4th m car and 6th bmw in general and your a little new to bmw’s as i recall

Yes I’m comparing it because how many BMW race cars (since you brought up the whole heritage) do you see as a convertible? Just about none? Oh ok. They’re adapting to a changing market which demands efficiency and diesel is just about the best option for efficiency. It’s not like their flagship M cars are diesel (M3 & M5). I’m sure the BMW M purists were up in arms when they offered the M3s as a convertible and in automatic/SMG, but guess what, it sold cars and that’s the object of the game.

Oh man, you brought up my weight??? What is the world to do!!! OMGWTFBBQ!!!
At least I can actually drive the car towards part of it’s potential.

As for the second bold part… Because I’m on my second BMW means anything? I’m sorry that I am “new” to the BMW ownership world, but I can still call ignorance when I see it.

Also, don’t you tell people the M3 is your girls car? Then why do you say you own it? And have it in your sig? One sec, lemme go add my gf’s car to my sig, and why bother stopping there, add everything my family has for cars in there.

the e30 m3 was available as a convertible and that was the first m… so a convertible m is not out of the ordinary.

i was trying to show that the coupe vs convertible thread is almost pointless since there are so many factors such as weight of driver, quantity of passengers, optional equipment included … for instance why did bmw m’s come with nav or stupid leather? it should have all been cloth and manual everything for weight reduction.

the essence of an m car is still intact whether it has a roof or not.

your on your second bmw …and one of which is a diesel… it means you are quick to become a fanboi and just jump on the bandwagon of everything bmw is great. i can look at it this way because i dont have brand loyalty as you see i had two s audi’s in the middle of owning the bmw’s i have. bmw is just another car and if i find one i like more i have no problems saying it since i have nothing vested in the company.

the m3 is my girls car now… initially i bought it and didnt really like it but furthermore how do you know my girlfreidns financial situation? what if the car is still mine but she drives it? what if she wanted it and i gave it to her? you have no idea how her or my finances are.

No. The first M was the M1 in 1978, followed by the M535i in 1979. That’s quite a few years before the E30M’s time. If you’re such a BMW M enthusiast, at least get your facts straight, please.

You do realize that my original argument, which you have attempted to augment into something else, was that it is all marketing and essentially that the “M” nomenclature is simply marketing tactics vs. sticking with “racing heritage,” right?

LOL, just because I have only two BMWs means I’m a fanboi? Get the fuck out of here with that shit. While I do have loyalty to the brand, it is not based simply on ownership, but based on facts concerning resale values vs. other German marques, quality, reliability vs. other German sport-luxury vehicles, and so on and so forth. I’d like you to show me any other proof to me being a brand loyalist, as I’ve owned:
Three Nissan/Infiniti cars
One Honda
One Porsche
One Subaru
One Audi
Two BMWs
One DSM

Lots of brand loyalty there, right? I’m all over the map. I think I have at least a few other vehicles to compare.

Can you do me a favor and please point out where I mentioned finances? Oh, you can’t? I wonder why… Oh yea, I didn’t bring finances up. You’re so quick to get on the defense about this lol. If it is your girl’s car though, why do you represent it as your own?
