Career Advise

Well, here is the story. I have been going to CCAC for a while now. Dragging my feet taking a few classes here and there (basic stuff like English and math) and a few Business classes. Really don’t know what I want to do for the rest of my life. Anyways, I want to change to Engineering, seems like something I would enjoy doing, but I just don’t know what’s out there in the field. What kind of jobs can be had with a degree in Engineering? I have looked at various sites like monster jobs and so on to get an idea. So anyways, what I am looking for is where I should transfer to from CCAC, any advise from people in this field, and any thing to help me.

There’s a lot of different areas - mechanical (the best) :), civil, chemical, electrical, industrial. As far as jobs, it depends where (if) you’re willing to relocate to. Engineering is a really broad field. Design, manufacturing, analysis, research - all depends what you’re interested in.

Are you good at math/science? You may not end up having to use it for your job, but you’ll have to get through the classes. Even if you go for an engineering technology degree, which has less theoretical based classes, there will still be a lot of math.

For schools, even though I went to CMU, Pitt and Penn State are probably the best bang for the buck assuming you want to stay in-state. I’m pretty sure most of the basic class credits will transfer, might want to check that out.

Are you coming to the Pittspeed party tonight? We can talk there more if you want.

Business Degree.

Pitt and Robert Morris both have very respectable business schools. In the business world If ur not a suit telling other people what to do, ur a bitch being told what to do.

My company is always on the lookout for civil engineers. They do mostly road design and bridges here and there. They also handle sanitary sewers and waste water treatment plant design. To me that doesn’t seem very fun but I’m a computer nerd. Only the basics of math are required as most of the number crunching is done by the computer and checked by one of the old heads.

you almost do anything with some sort of engineering degree. from FBI detective to a Sales Manager. Anything.

Yea, business doesnt appeal to me anymore. I had the idea that i wanted to own a company (didnt know what) so i thought business would be a way to get to that. After some thought i understood that with the degree it wouldnt get me into anything great, just retail positions which i dont want.

So then i thought engineering would be good b/c im always looking at things thinking about how they tick, and what can be done to make them better. I dont know how to explain it, but that just interests me.

actuarial science at Robert Morris… best way to go

I am willing to relocate anywhere really, pittsburgh in my eyes isnt the place i want to be in come 10-20 years (althought i like it here, i look how my sisters are doing in the DC area making tons of money, and i dont think i have that same chance here)

I am good in math and science, i pick that stuff up quickly for sure.

I was have been thinking about Pitt, and that seems like the place i want to go to, but i was just wondering if there was anything better (which im sure CMU is, but probably to expensive)

Penn State is better than pitt for engineering, #16 in the country i think. they’re both about the same price…pitt might be a little cheaper but not much.

CMU is crazy expensive, like $40k a year. not worth it.

Being a current Pitt M.E. student, from what I’ve seen in the past 3 1/2 years, go elsewhere. Also, if you do decide on Engineering, look into the co-op program, it’s been great.

Pitt and Penn State always seemed about the same as far as curriculum but that was years ago. Don’t really know now. CMU offers smaller size. I did an honors research program where you worked directly with a professor on a project. The cost is kind of getting out of hand though. Scholarships and grants always help though!

my brothers are civil/chemical engineers and both went to Pitt… both are doing very well right now too

My friends step-brother went to RIT up in Rochester, NY for engineering. He’s now working down in Texas at Texas Instruments. Just bought a new Cadillac CTS-V recently. He’s making pretty good money. Now my friend is following in his footsteps. He transferred from Penn State-Behrend(Erie) up to RIT.

my roomate up at school was mach. eng. up at penn state. graduated and had a job the next week then three or four months later got a job at the bettis plant in west mifflin. makes 55+ a year and is 25 living at home.

bastard.

Funny that you say that, since i can see Bettis from my back yard.

If you can see Bettis, then they’re watching you. They don’t fool around with security out there.

i remember when i was little we used to play in the woods by bettis and two guys came up on us in something like fatigues with guns and told us to never come back, they probably got us on the motion detectors they got. we werent even close to the building id say about 150 feet away from the fence.

what is bettis?
