I’d like to start using kitchen scraps and such as compost. What’s the best way of doing it? Anyone do the worm composting stuff? Seems like a good idea and a good way to recycle some shit.
I’m picking up my compost tumbler next weekend from a friend that moved away and didn’t want to take it with her (SCORE!). It’s a super easy way to do it, but the things are ridiculously expensive. I’d just build a compost bin, otherwise.
Great info about vermicomposting (with worms). Yes, it’s from a gardening forum full of chicks, but it’s good info

Stuff you can compost that you probably didn’t think you could:
the second link is what I’m looking to do. It doesn’t mention adding dirt…do I need to add regular dirt or no? Also is there a place to get a bunch of these worms? Like 100 of them.
Nope, you don’t add dirt. The newspapers and food turn into the dirt, as far as I know. Check craigslist in the farm and garden section, I know there are a couple listing in Rochester like this one http://rochester.craigslist.org/grd/1652132363.html. Local garden stores may have them, too.
I tried it with leaves, food scraps, paper, wood scraps/sawdust, etc. I found an article online suggesting to take a garbage bin and cut slots through it… basically just stab it with a utility knife to allow it to breathe without leaking. Then add equal amounts top soil to compost-able material.
One bin is doing OK, the other 2… they aren’t doing anything.
Just put up some on your property chicken wire and dump all your fucking garbage in it so the mice eat it then dig in to your neighbors new garage!
don’t worry about covering it, because people who have buddies on the village board don’t need to follow common peoples laws.
Fucking douchebags.
My parents backyard smells like dogshit (oh well they have dogs they dont clean up after, and when they do they dump it in the compost), rats everywhere, parents complained about it, but he was buddies with the guy that came out, so he just shot the shit with the guy for 30 mins then he drove away.
Glad I don’t live there anymore, but fuck.
Inconsiderate assholes.
oh gross! you’re not supposed to put feces from dogs or cats in there because they’re carnivorous. Rabbit/chicken crap is ok for compost. NO meat scraps, that could be what attracted the rats/mice. Ugh, people are idiots.
I found our shredder at work, shreds stuff into really small strips, so it should work great for worms…I also read on another site that it’s not how deep the container is, it’s the length. I’m going to try one of my rubbermaid ones later
Neat. Tell me how it goes, I might give it a shot this year. Once I get over the whole “ew, gross, worms!” part of it, haha.
I gotta get some worms, and I don’t feel like driving to Rah cha cha, to get a handful of worms…I might call around pet shops or try and find something local.
Yea, thats not composting, thats just retarded. A real compost pile or bin should smell like dirt.
