computer file storage by key word tagging?

I’m looking to buy an external Hard Drive for the only purpose of storing all of my 1000’s of igital pictures over the years. Is there any program or software out there that allows me to tag the picture with a keyword so i can search out for specific pictures on the Hard Drive. All this is to avoid saving the same picture multiple times just to put in folders under different catagories.

for instance, i may have a picture of my daughter in my BMW while on a trip to letchworth. I would want to tag that picture as “Peyton, BMW, Letchworth” for ease of search in the future if i want to pull up any one of those 3 categories.

input?

Adobe Light Room 3 lets you do this fairly easily.

Adobe Bridge. For a faster searching, Cumulus is database driven, therefore quite speedy. Bridge has the better interface by far though.

thanks for the input guys… i’ll look into the details. Jay, is the google program online based? I’m looking for offline storage. Again…i will look into the details of the programs tonight. thanks again.

If you’re looking for online storage, flickr

There are two "Picasa"s there. The program you install locally and can use for what you’re trying to do, and Picasa Web Albums, which is online photo storage (which conveniently integrates with the locally installed program).

I’ve got a ton of stuff on flickr but after seeing Picasa on friends computer I’m going to start using it for my local photo management. I have a feeling once I start doing that it will only be a matter of time before I start using it for online photo storage/sharing as well.

the online storage will rape your image quality

We use the local client for some organization and basic tweaks on the point-and-shoot stuff
