Convertible top question - Have you Dyed the vinyl?

Wondering if anyone has ever dyed the vinyl roof before? I’m not looking to change the color or anything fancy. Just looking to get a black dye (If you know of a brand, please name it) and apply it to the top. I know I can get possibly another year or 2 out of the roof I currently have, but cant stand the faded look.

I did a quick google search and found this video. Anyone ever messed around in this area?

My dad did on his jeep, tan to black. Been holding up for 2 years and looks great.

Do you know what he used? I feel like it would reseal the roof a little better as well for durability reasons. I just don’t want to get some bs stuff that dries the vinyl out quicker and cracks it.

I’m not 100% sure but I believe he used Rust-Oleum Vinyl paint. It looks realy good and holding up well.

Yammy, this could be a great excuse to pick up a hardtop?!

Way to much damn money and nowhere really to leave it when I want it off. I’d only find use for it on days like today/ spring/fall. I’m just going to end up getting a 02+ top.

Yeah, I don’t know about that. lol I’m looking for something more like a dye, not so much rust-oleum. I think that would be too thick of material.

Paint?? o.O

What ever he used worked awesome and it looks great.

let me know if you find out, i should do my S too

I believe this is what the guy used. LOL if so, I’m going to end up rapping plastic and tape all over my car to make sure this doesn’t get on anything. lol

I was contemplating using a dye on my s2000 top also because mine was faded and dry. After doing some research people have had good luck restoring and maintaining the vinyl top on our cars with 303 product. I went ahead and purchased a 303 Vinyl Convertible Top Kit (make sure you get the vinyl kit) it made a world of a difference my top is now a rich dark black that is UV protected. I wish I had before pics all I have is these shitty after pics. Whatever you choose to do I hope it works well for you.

Thank you. I’ll have to take a look again. From my quick search it seems to be more of a cleaning solution than dying/restoring color. I believe my top is just so faded from the sun and being 14 years old (assuming it hasn’t been changed since I got it with 33k miles.) I think it just needs dying or replacing. Rather milk a year or two more out of it if I can. Not leaking or anything like that.

Just came across this but feel the water base kind will not hold so well.

If you dont do this by the h-t meet I can give you some 303 in a spray bottle just to see how it holds up, then you can take it from there.

What day is the meet going on? I didn’t see any further updates about this. I would be interested in seeing this. I just was looking at the dye because it was something you can Paint/roll on without scrubbing it into the top. The less manhandling I do, the better. Shit… its a 14 year old top which has been parked outside the past 4 or 5 years from my knowledge during summer.

I believe it’s still the 28th, if it does not happen I am down for a meet/cruise after I finish getting tuned.

one of you should just stop being lame and buy my hardtop

$400

Edit: Ok, I’ll meet you at half $600
