alrighty long story short picked up a crv with water damage got the car dry and running but has a CEL on along with a nasty misfire. when i try to read the codes it just says unable to link… leads me to belive that the ecu needs to be changed (it was full of debris and corrosion) so it is a 98 crv 5-speed manual, do i need to obtain a 5 speed ecu or can i use an auto? also does anyone have kicking around that i can plug in to see if it resolves the issue then ill order one.

i would imagine you need the 5 speed ecu for that.
check your lighter fuse. if thats blown it will not connect.

what does the lighter fuse have to do with the circuit tho? there was power to the obdII plug because my reader powered up and attempted to load data then would say unable to retrieve
it makes no sense, same with fords.
Where did you pick this up from? AWD? Sounds like a 5 speed version of my sis’s.
in a honda, it has a solid cel that you cant get codes out of, the ecu is almost certainly bad. The only times ive ran across this is if the ecu is really corroded internally, and they are just about impossible to clean. You need a 5sp ecu i believe, but it might run with an auto ecu (just for troubleshooting purposes, not permanently)

changed lighter fuse still had the same result. Anyone have a ecu i could plug in to see if it fixes the problem
All I have to say is: bloody utters.
Think about it, if it has water damage that ecu was probably the first thing to go. try a integra one, it should work.
ill look around all my teg stuff it odbI so i dont have an ecu kicking around
auto or 5 speed will work, auto will just throw codes for the auto missing
generally flood damaged cars are not a good investment as you will run into corrosion problems year after year unless you replace the whole harness
but will it fail inspection for throwing an auto tranny code?
i couldnt go wrong i paid ppeanuts for the car…
