I was approached by someone who wanted to incorporate a gift they had received for christmas…into a table for their chalet in Ellicottville.
The piece i was given was this:
They told me that the table will be against the backside of a couch and want it to be 60" long and about 32" high. He also gave me a sample of wood to use to match the material and finish to his existing woodwork.
The last requirement was to have a shelf on the bottom to put his crates with file folders on the bottom.
I sketched up a basic design to fabricate a frame out of square steel tubing with a couple of shelves and way to incorporate the gift piece.
So… for fun i went to work and came up with this. Personally, not my style but it suites the style of the chalet perfectly.
welding up the top frame
Added the legs and some accent tubing:
I cut some book-end pieces to put on either side of the “gift” to extend the piece and make it longer: (the gift piece absent)
some un-documented steps here.
Everything welded up and fresh from the Powdercoater. Coated “silver-vein”
Had some Oak panels made up and cut to size for the top and 2 shelves:
close-ups of the end pieces that made up. These were drawn in cad and cut by waterjet:
The bottom shelf slides out:
an added touch that was a surprise to the owner. I engraved the top panel with “OFOB” which stands for “Old Farts On Boards” which is sort of a club he’s in with his friends…an avid 67y.o. snowboarder.
Done…but not in place at the chalet. I’ll take better pictures when get a chance.
Took about 9hrs of work including the metal fabricating and wood work. An enjoyable project to show that being married w/ a kid hasn’t put me out of the DIY game.
