DIY: Made another new bumper

I put larger tires on my Jeep and had some minor rubbing issues with the wheel arch of the bumper. Trying to get into off-roading i figured this was a good opportunity to beef up my bumper a bit.

1st step: I kicked off my original bumper:

used a piece of 1/8" by 8" hot rolled steel for the main outter skin:

after making a few measurements, i made my marks for the first bends

in the press brake:

the initial test fit:

next i used some 4" channel as the meat and potatoes of the bumper that will take any load from pushing or pulling:

Cut some 1/2" steel bar stock to weld into the legs of the channel for mounting shackles

shackle brackets welded in place:

drilled and chamfered the holes for the shackle mounts, again in 1/2" steel plate

cut a hole in the outter skin in formed earlier so the shackle mounts are welded directly to the reinforced channel:

welded the channel to the back of the bumper skin:

using the press brake again, i formed 1/2" by 1-1/2" bar stock for the grill, which i also ripped out.

there’s a lot of missing steps here, but it was all boxed in and then welded the bumper was welded directly to the frame:

Still not 100% complete. I need to weld something to protect the bottom end
of my radiator and put some mesh behind the grill to stop rocks/branches from going through my radiator.

Changed the look of the jeep quite a bit. Thanks to audios for helping me man handle this project.

NICE work as always

redneck.

I knew whose thread this was when I read the title from the main forum index.

Looks, um, highly functional. I’m convinced that you do not sleep.

i think i’m going to make a shovel/axe rack and have it mounted to the hood… why? because that would be badass.

sorry.

good work. like always!

what are those, 30s? 255/70/R16.

You ever been on www.mallcrawlin.com ? Really good Grand Cherokee site, a lot of DIYs on there you can get some good inspiration. You seem like the kind of guy that would enjoy building your own suspension.

you guys and CF… you’re all CF whores.

tires are 245/75/R16. I wanted something good for snow. Come spring i’ll throw some mudders on and maybe a small lift.

very nice josh  we definitly need to do some offroading soon…
next time u get bored why dont u make some skid plates for it  then let me hire u to make some for mine too
