Do You Believe in Evolution

If you grew up in a cave, alone, away from any human interaction and influence, and then one day someone came and asked you, “do you believe in God?” what do you think you’d say?

What I’m trying to get at is, if there was no church, no one taught about religion or afterlife, etc, would your life be any different/would you naturally assume there’s a creator?

well i doubt you would come up with the theory of evolution all by your lonesome either, so that isn’t a very good example…

in fact its pretty well documented that human civilizations across the entire world independently developed concepts of god or gods where as the theory of evolution seems to have developed in the form we know it in but a single culture and it is widely attributed to a single individual at that…

no actually i think saying something is infinite is the easy route out…

i think a far more interesting and challenging view of the universe is summed up in philosophy, not physics. find the short story by borges about the library of babel. essentially it is a story of a library containing books of identical length but of every possible combination of an alphabet. since it is created from a limited set of parts it is in fact finite but it also contains every possible grammatical organization of those words which is actually infinite. something finite containing something infinite- tough thing to think about. although these infinite combinations of grammatical sentences are also extremely rare as the vast vast majority of the books would contain nothing but non-sense. so you have a vanishingly small number of legible texts that actually represent an infinite set, mixed in with an enormous amount of non-sense all contain in a finite library of books.

and the real kicker, the physical size of this library, which is finite, wouldn’t even physically fit within the bounds of the known universe…

meh to this entire thread :tif:

It’s pretty evident God, god, sheeba, Buddha, Dennis rodman etc and aliens are one in the same. Its just logical. I was raised a christian did 8 years in a Lutheran school and was influenced daily until about 18. Now that I’ve been on both sides of the fence I can see that >1% of people really have a clue.

YESSS^^^^

I’m an all knowing and quite forgiving God. AS LONG AS YOU DO WHAT FUCK I TELL YOU TO DO!!!
I want you to love ALL your neighbors. UNLESS THEY WORSHIP ANOTHER GOD, CAUSE THEN IT’S OK TO KILL THEM.

If you’re acting moral to avoid hell, are you truly moral? I believe being truly moral requires no promise of heaven or fear of hell. The golden rule keeps things simple.

Jesus had the beard, not God. Duhhhh

So 1% of people don’t have a clue?

I’m on Tennspeed…want to find out?

is that a Huffy forum?

Let’s not confuse God with religion. Religion is man made… to control man.

Can an admin. delete this thread before it “evolves” into something which makes me want to start shooting and begin a thread about “extinction”.

LOL

oh come on don’t make pleas to the forum ‘creators’…

There is no god. Evolution is fact.

Religion only still exists because we’re brainwashed when we’re young and vulnerable. If religion didn’t exist this world would be a much better place.

Evolution technically is not a fact. I have to say, that the evidence is overwhelmingly stronger than any bible story, by a long shot.

Let people believe what they want. I am a communed and confirmed catholic. Haven’t been to a mass in many years. I believe more in evolution and the scientific evidence way more than the bible stories. However, the bible stories are great anecdotes to teach children what is right/wrong. The ten commandments, love thy neighbor, help others, treat others how you wish to be treated. Whoever this Jesus guy is, he is the type of person that we should probably all strive to be.

IMO, religion is far from brainwashing. If you’ve ever been to a catholic mass, you would understand that usually the priest (if he’s good) will read a passage that sounds cryptic. He will then discuss the passage and relate it to current times. Talk about what catholics believed and how we could bring that out in the modern world. These talks don’t brainwash you to go out and act evil. They are anecdotes to be a good citizen and a better person.

I called it a fact to emphasize the strong evidence for it and I wanted to show how strongly I support it. Occasionally I indulge in a little hyperbole to get my point across.

The existence of DNA really does make it a fact though. It makes me laugh when people who deny evolution support DNA testing for court cases. How could you not believe in evolution but acknowledge the concept of DNA?

You over exaggerate with just about everything you post.

You know it’s funny, I was just sitting here thinking that with all my liberal rants lately and now this, I might be on the fast track to becoming one of the most despised members on here.

The thing is, I’ve been researching and discussing evolution and the existence of religion for probably about 10 years now. I wrote a 25 page paper in college talking about how religion is hurting our world.

That’s why I decided to get right to the point with my post.

To your point about letting people believe what they want, that would be all fine and dandy if their beliefs didn’t hold mankind back.

An obvious example is stem cell research. We could have been growing new organs for amputees or people in need of a transplant by now. But no, the bible thumpers had a fit and all government funding was cut.

Abe Lincoln should have let the South secede they’ve been dragging our country down since it began.
