Drift vs. Gopro Which is better?

So I am wondering if anyone has any experience with the Drift 170 HD video camera. I am aware of people using the Gopro and how well they like them.

I recently won a photo contest that Holiday Valley had going on. The winning prize was a Drift 170HD video camera and $50 to Holiday Valley.

I have never used either of the two video cameras, but wondering which is the better make/model.

They both come with kits for mounting to mountain bikes, helmets…etc.

This is the Drift Innovation HD170 if none of you are familiar with it.

Damn. None of you have ever tried out the Drift HD camera I’m guessing. I have this coming in a few days, and plan to get a Gopro as well, So I guess I’ll be the test subject for this for everyone.

I have a skier friend who swears by his drift because it has an LCD screen that allows for shot framing. He uses some sort of hand mount and doesn’t even bother putting it on a helmet.

Honestly, the best thing to use your camera for is filming others. POV snowboarding video fucking sucks. Even when you are tearing down a hill and going off a huge jump, the jumps seem tiny and it seems like you’re going really slow.

I have played with a drift, replay, contour, gopro (hero1, hero2 on order) and they are all the fucking same. Shitty low light image quality and colors that seem a bit weird.

Personally I like the drift and contour because I feel like they present less of a snag hazard in the BASE environment. That said, I am currently designing a new gopro mount that puts it on the front of the helmet without the plastic case, making it substantially smaller… I’m surprised there are not yet helmets with integrated camera mounts…

Didn’t see this thread initially, but I usually stick with the motto of, “If it’s for free, then it’s for me”.

You’ll likely not see a substantial difference in daylight that’ll warrant spending more money.

Also, and no offense, the super boring video that you’re going to play while your friends display thinly veiled boredom and put on youtube could be recorded with a non-hd gopro from 4 years ago and it still wouldn’t matter.

I feel like I’m a decent snowboarder. I can do flips and spins and shit, and all my POV video is so fucking uninteresting. Shooting other people is what your camera will be good for, because a POV backflip looks way lamer than a nicely tweaked 3 shot externally.

Hit me up when you go if you want any photos or video. I plan to take this camera and getting like a ski pole so that I can mount it on the end. When I go to competitions at HV, I get full access to walk as close to the rails and jumps as I want. Almost got pegged a few times last year. lol Atleast this will make for some cool Fisheye videos. also just looking to use this for snowboarding at like Vermont. More of memories than anything for that.

As from what I have heard with the Drift… they are better in lower levels of light compared to Gopros.

Everyone says one is better than the other, but they all are shitty. It’s like trying to choose which brand of toilet paper you’re going to eat.

Got this in the mail yesterday. This was the camera I won. 1 thing I already like about this. It has a 1.5" LCD display for play back and for recording. Not the greatest screen but for the size of the camera, this will help in reviewing video.

Cant wait to try this camera out. I have to find out a few things about it. Time it takes for recharge, how water resistant these cameras are with no waterproof case on it.

Edit: Already have a Hot shoe mount on the way. This will allow me to take photos and video at the same time since I’ll be aiming at the subject as it is.

I got the hot shoe mount in the mail today. I almost want to see if I can find something that can extend the mount forward a bit more. More so that its out of the way completely when I put my eye up to the view finder. Its not bad though for what it is.

I think I’m going to pick up a Drift for snowmobiling/skiing this year. That mount is a cool piece.

It’s going to take some getting use to. Not sure about how far back it sits because of the center mounting on the Drift. I’m sure it will still be pretty damn cool. Next will have to be a Nikon Fisheye lens.
