Drobo, the World’s First Storage Robot

think man, think…

why would someone have 100s of gigs of “kiddie pics”

giggity giggity!!!

side note the overnight shipping wasnt put in fast enough.

Came in today, popped in 2 ! TB drives and she is reading 923 gigs of useable storeage. Everything is pretty much plug and play. The initial set up was fucking silly easy. Packaging is pretty funny. It was a brown carboard box and the inside is colord black. The drobo itself is wrapped in ablack cloth.

What happens when you take out one of the drives and upgrade it to something larger or whatever? How do you put your other info onto the new drive if its all split up among all the HDD in there? Am I missing something?

RAID technology, it rebuilds based on what’s missing.
I would guess anyway.

Yup. Its pretty much similiar to raid 5 but will work with any size drives where raid pretty much only utilizes the size of your smallest drive.

If you go to the site and watch the demos you can see them streaming videos and copying files when he pulls a drive and it never misses a beat. Very cool stuff.

And you need at least three drives.(I think)

In raid 5 yes. The drobo can run with 2.

Yes you need 3 drives for RAID 5

Update?

No concerns?

well we are already in need of more drives but thats not drobos fault. Everything is great with it thus far. Once we get more TB drives for it we will know how sweet the expanding works.

Keep us updated.(Please)

I told Carl he needed more but he said no. Maybe now he will listen.

So you put two TB drives in and ended up with one TB of space? That’s just simple mirroring (raid 1) isn’t it?

Eventually at home I’m just going to pick up a couple 500GB drives, toss them in my desktop, and let windows mirror them for data integrity.

In the mean time I just downloaded a cool little freeware sync program that I run every few days that automatically syncs my laptop and desktop so I have two copies of everything in My Documents.

No because you can add a 3rd and or a 4th and the additional drives can be any size. Its very similiar to raid 5 but you don’t have to use the same size drive. If i were to throw a 500 gig in there the rest of the drves wouldn’t be limited by that.

Watch the demo its pretty interesting.

I would be interested to see how much more space shows up if you throw another 500gb HD in…

there are docs on the website that tell you how much it changes. My best guess would be like 250 added storage.

ORBO… the first and only robot.

:stuck_out_tongue:

UPDATE: We slapped in 2 more terrabyte drives. Drobo reads 2 tb of storeage but it will let you exceed that by alot but you risk losing data if one of the drives fail… Still a fun device.
