Anyone heard of this as yet? Or have experience?

CoWorker is looking into building a HTPC / Fileserver and mentioned this to me.

Seems like a fairly easy & cheap fileserve solution for home.

Drobo, the World’s First Storage Robot
Automated storage you don’t have to manage.

Chances are you get passionate about creating or collecting digital content, not about managing the storage where it lives. For you we’ve created Drobo, the first storage system to take the pain out of keeping your content safe. Avoid the hassles associated with managing multiple external hard drives or managing the complexities of RAID. Attach Drobo to your Mac or PC and let it manage your storage so you don’t have to.
Drobo guards everything on It.
Drobo combines up to four hard drives into a big pool of protected storage. Start with two, grow to four, then upsize smaller drives—get Terabytes of protection.
Drobo Upgrades Capacity On-The-Fly.
Add drives to Drobo at any time. Mix ’n match capacities, brands or speeds. No downtime, data migration, or waiting to access new capacity.
Drobo Lets You “Pay as You Grow”
Hard drives get bigger and cheaper all the time. Don’t buy storage capacity until you need it. Buy capacity “just-in-time” possibly saving you hundreds of dollars.
Drobo Manages Storage, so you Don’t Have to
Just connect Drobo to your Mac or PC. No software required. No RAID levels. No management or configuration. Drobo does everything for you.
Get rid of multiple external drives. Avoid the complexity of RAID. Attach a Drobo to your system and let it manage your storage so you don’t have to.

Features

  • Non-Stop Data Protection
Automatically protects your data with no setup or configuration. If the status lights are green, your data is safe.
  • Data Aware
Knows where your data is stored on the disks so Drobo knows the most effective way to protect your data and repair itself in case of a disk failure or data corruption.
  • Simple LED Management
Drobo communications are as simple as a traffic light. All lights green, your data is safe. Yellow light, Drobo is 85% full, add or replace a drive. Red light, your data is not safe, add or replace a drive immediately.
  • Autonomous Storage Management
Your data is always accessible. Even when you add or replace hard drives, Drobo manages the re-configuration and data protection in the background, so your data is always available to you.
  • Mix n’ Match Drive Capacities
Unlike rigid, inflexible RAID solutions, Drobo recognizes the capacities available from a group of varied disk drives. Using an intelligent mixture of industry standard practices to protect your data, Drobo can offer significantly more storage capacity than standard RAID solutions. Just how you would expect storage to work, add more drives or replace smaller drives with larger ones, and get more space.

yeah, i actually looked into that the other day. It seems pretty cool, and would be real nice to have sitting next to the tv

we may be getting one at work. Its a great solution if you need an array that doesn’t have to be anything fancy. Its like RAID 5 only more potential because you can use any sized drive. Its only a matter of time before they start making their own arrays with this technology and scsi drives.

^Score. Lemme know what you think of it.

It would be a pretty low key setup. A few hundred gigs to store DVR’d stuff & music as I was told. Me thinks this would fit the bill as low upkeep multipurpose fileserver.

month later…

I’m not sure what the deal is with this yet. Our situation doesn’t need it yet but once I have it we will post pics…

well shit man, make some moves or something. So long as you don’t have to see any of Matt’s dangly parts.

download porn on the citrix farm, I’m sure that will eat up the drivespace quickly.

FOR FUCK SAKE!!! They are out of drobos!!

you’re such a cock tease

I’m back, new egg has them!

I just showed my bro, he is buying one for our company.
Is any storage included or do you have to buy it seperately?

you have to buy it seperately.

you buy the hdd seperately… but you can mix & match sizes & speeds, so long as they are 3.5" drives.

Using this Drobo & the price of drives now, you can have a TB for ~$200.

I’d read the reviews on newegg first though… seems that some people were a little let down by it (speed being the biggest downside)

I have read em, and it seems more of an access point concern… once your files are up your fine (it seems).

Cons: Slower than internal harddrive. The only time I notice that is when I check properties of a folder. The internal hardrive will give a result noticeably faster.
Other Thoughts: Once the media is playing, the speed is fine. Plays movies, videos, music, whatever, without a hitch. Peace of mind knowing that my scanned tax returns, pictures of kids, irreplaceable home videos, ripped DVD’s, etc., knowing these things will never be lost is worth it.

speed is not really our concern, we just need to move some data from some security cameras that the drives on the server aren’t really cutting it. Should handle everything perfectly.

And who the fuck buys one of thes for kids pictures?
