do the drives have to be balanced in size, or can you mix and match?

It’s a NAS that utilizes “XRAID” (expandable RAID 0, 1, or 5) not a Drobo, you could put in mis-matched sizes but because its a RAID device not JBOD you’ll only get to use as much as the smallest drive’s capacity per (so less than idea).
