First of all, although I love hip hop, this is not about
Instead, it’s about
Now that I have your attention, is anyone using Network Attached Storage?
We have 4 computers at home and would like wireless access to a main drive to store photos / music / family files and also work as a backup.
Supposedly this Iomega piece below has good reviews and is easy for a numbnuts like myself to set up and play with… It’s also $150 (pretty much my spending limit).
NAS is a pretty good way to go as long as the device isn’t a POS. Ugh flashing back to my days in the server room… with that… thing… so archaic! Thankfully this new one looke simple enough and eay to use!
Go with a raid network enclosure and always keep important data copied in offsite storage. I actually should take my own advise lol. I don’t trust hard drives.
I know they paid way less than $302 at the time, though. Look through the features, its cool! There are others out there like Drobo and some other shit. Def get raid with gigabit lan.
i just have about 2TB worth of harddrives in my machines. i dont think using externals is a bad idea though. only thing is, you want a fast trasnfer rate. just like that brand new USB that the ASUS boards have. that shit is quick man.
The above gizmo looks real cool, but it’s just way beyond what I want to spend. I didn’t check the video out but I doubt it would convince me to spend like an extra $250 heheh…
I know. I just put it out there for anyone else looking at this thread heh.
It sounds hot, I don’t know if even I’d have a use for it right now since I’m the only one who accesses anything at home (dad just uses internet) and my TV isn’t connected to my network. Maybe when we finish the addition and put a nice TV down stairs I’ll redo my network.
you could build one yourself with some old computer hardware using linux if you are savy. I run a 2k3 domain controller and exchange server in my home so centralized storage is easy with that but obviously not something all users would find beneficial but for a layperson nas is deffintly the way to go for ease of setup and use. however back that nas up if the drive poops you could be stuck.
