HP has an up to 50% off right now on Notebook accessories. Somehow this MediaVault NAS with 1TB (500GB Raid Mirror) and it’s brother at 1.5TB is considered a laptop accessory.
I was looking at this when it was about $400…So just picked it up at $300 retail less an additional $150 by mail.
This is what I got to retire some smaller network and usb drives in the house:
you have an option you can go 1TB no raid, or 500GB with Raid 1. I’m sticking with the raid…and it is really 460GB usable.
There is a larger unit with 2x 750GB drives
Anyway:
Remote Web Access
Media Streaming
iTunes Aggregation
Automated Full HD backups of laptops on the network…
yes all in all i think its a great deal.
Plus there is tons of material on the web about hacking this unit…overclocking and such.
I didn’t buy from HP direct. You dohave to buy from an authorized HP dealer though. I got mine from Erie Computer on line for $299. Mailing in the rebate form today.
Yeah it’s a decent unit. I like it. Speed seems much better than my last NAS. No brainer Mirror and the NTI backup software are a plus.
Some small quirks, but overall a good device. Check the wiki online for more info and hacks.
How long did it take you to get yours from Erie Computer? That’s where i ordered mine. Where did it ship out of? PA? I’m hoping it’ll get here for the weekend!
This will be my first NAS. I was going to get a regular external USB/Firewire/e-SATA drive to back up data, but this deal popped up. Hopefully with this I can provide web access to my files. When 1 TB (or 1.5TB if supported) drives get cheaper i’ll pop a pair of those in this and still have a decent amount of space.
i ordered on a sunday…it said backordered until friday…but they must have received them early and i got it on that Friday.
And yes, you can setup remote access to your files.
Got my unit all set up except for internet sharing. I have my personal web address set up, have port forwarding set up in my router (D-Link Di-624), the NAS is getting an IP from DHCP but noone can connect to the NAS from a web browser over the internet. I have Verizon DSL, and my IP seems to change frequently. Would that cause things to go screwy? Does the NAS need a static IP?
