1TB NAS for $150 (Correction only $50)

You need to setup port forwarding for your NAS on the verizon router…a static IP would also help things…

Then you can use a dynamic dns service like no-ip.com so even if your ip changes you can still connect.

I’m using the original Westell modem with a D-Link Di-624 router which is about 6 years old BTW. The Westell modem was used before Verizon did the combo modem/router thing.

OK, here’s what i have set up in my router:

-Router assigns permanent static IP’s to everything connected to the network (desktop pc, network printer and the Media vault).

-Router settings for Port forwarding is set up for the Media Vault (MV), going to the correct IP address set up for the MV. HTTP is set up for port 80 and HTTPS is port 443 and TCP is the protocol for both (default settings).

I can access the MV and change settings, read/write data to the disks and everything else while connected through the local network (my desktop pc) but I can’t access it through the internet from another PC. I’m pretty sure Verizon dynamically assigns my IP address and it changes frequently. I’m using the free personal web address service that comes with the MV which is provided bty TZO. Does my router’s IP have to be static for the remote access to work, or is that taken care of by the web address service?

EDIT: Does anyone know if Verizon blocks inbound port 80 HTTP traffic?

EDIT AGAIN: Verizon does indeed block inbound HTTP requests on port 80. I took LZ’s advice and setup a no-ip account to get around the dynamic IP problem and redirected incoming HTTP traffic around port 80 in my router. Everything is working fine and dandy now!

Hmmm I’m tempted with this. But if I am patient I’ll be getting a Terrastation from work which is 4 250’s in raid 5. I just gotta wait another month or two to move the info that’s on that to our SAN. Once that’s done it will be mine MUAHAHAHA… ok

how fast is it? the details on the hp site are… no details at all lol. what does it run OS-wise? if it is quick thats a great price

i have a 500gb linkstation live that i’m quickly running out of space on so looking to upgrade soon. curious to see how this performs streaming HD video

edit: finally found a review… looks like it runs a linux based server like the linkstation http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/191262/hp-media-vault-pro-mv5020.html its not the exact one but should be comparative.

Well, I stand corrected. Either someone screwed up or they changed their policy. It was supposed to be 50% of purchase price. People on fatwallet were showing that.

But my check just arrived for $250. That makes this NAS a steal at only $50 out of pocket. Yahtzee!

When did you send out your rebate forms? I’m still waiting for my check to come and it’s been 8 weeks.

probably around 1/30 ish

Well, I got my $250 rebate check in the mail today. Seems like HP didn’t bother to read their own rebate rules…
