e30 + m50b25tu

Almost everything is disconnected, unbolted, and the m20 is just about ready to be taken out but unfortuntley I’m having trouble getting the guibo unbolted since theres a nice big ol driveshaft

damper around it.

pics!!! how hard would you say it is to swap an e30?

Relatively easy, it’s been done so much that there are right ups EVERYWHERE.

Its been pretty straightforward so far until I got to this flex joint removal part. This basically has all the info necessary for the swap http://www.e30dohc.com/wiki/index.php?title=DOHC_Swap_Basics

Probably gonna try and loosen the motor and tranny mount to see if I can make myself some more room to acces the rest of the guibo bolts. I’ve removed the 3 that secure the guibo to the transmission output flange but can’t really get to the ones on the driveshaft/damper side.

I’ve also removed the csb bolts and driveshaft to diff bolts but can’t seem to bend the driveshaft enough to get it to slide apart at the slip joint.

Why are you splitting the driveshaft? You only need to remove the 3 bolts from the trans, drop the csb, and pull the entire unit out to get the motor out. Simple as pie.

Cool build, looking forward to some photos…

These were pretty much the two things I did first when I was taking apart the e36 parts car and it worked just fine. For some reason in this case I’m not getting the same result. Gonna go out there now and have another go at it.

Well, after being a bit forceful I managed to sandwich a flathead between the guibo and trans input flange and used it to pop the guibo off the trans outflange shaft it was apparently stuck on.

Which led to this

and the bay which is starting to show some surface rust, which I might as well fix and respray now that the engines out.

I hate pulling motors in those cars, such weird angles necessary!

i hate putting s50s in these cars, such weird angles necessary!

So, is there some easy way to remove the fuse/relay box and the engine bay harness without having to disconect a million things under the dash?

dudes, hose out that engine bay before u stuff the new motor in. Im guna have to get a ride in my old car when she is done. This was my original intent when i bought it a couple years ago.

might as well this, might as well that. in on page one, lol.

So while I’m waiting for a few more things to come in and since the engines out I decided to swap out my old, leaky, shitty 4.0 rack, for a non leaking 3.2 e36 rack I got off my parts car.

How to tell your rack has shit the bed.

Shortened steering knuckle made to fit the e36 rack

and after some work

Now the front has some awesome toe out, but its nothing an alignment can’t fix

looking good…

A little off topic, but how do you like the tile floor in the garage, is it pretty durable? Did you put that floor in there?

X…

So I’ve been busy the last few couple of days and unfortuntley I forgot to take pics of most the work. I finished grinding down all the rust spots in the engine bay and gave everything a nice sanding. Since there was still some pitting in the metal from the rust and various other imperfections like seam sealer and undercoating in some spots, I ended up deciding to spray the bay with black
hammered finished rustoleum. It sprays on somewhat thick and the finish is very orange peely and after seeing it on friends car I thought it would be perfect for an engine bay. It hides pretty much
any imperfections and is REALLY durable, hard to scratch, resistant to chipping and whatnot.

I also managed to stuff the silly m50 in there today. Strangely it was a lot faster than taking the old m20 out. All thats left is to finish hooking up the various wiring and putting the bumper and
fenders back on.

I love it because unlike my concrete driveway it doesn’t soak up any spills and makes it super easy to clean stuff. Seems like its been pretty durable since I move hoists with engines around the garage and have accidently dropped heavy objects several times and haven’t noticed any cracks or damage. The floor was already there when the house was purchased.

Very nice job, she’s coming along well. I see your located on the Island too.

So after taking a small break and being on vacation for the past 2 and a half weeks I decided to drive the car out to get the exhaust welded but ran into a small problem. When I was bleeding the clutch I noticed brake fluid dripping out of my bell housing so now I need to wait until tomorrow for my new clutch slave.

I also picked up these while in Germany for 20$

Just need to get my hands on a set of crosshairs to smoke them.

very nice… sounds like you’ve had it pretty easy with this swap.
