US car companies really shot them selves in the foot by not doing proper marketing research.

In the late 60’s and 70’s foreign cars that were first introduced outsold american cars by allot and for allot less because they did infact appeal more broadly to the market place and had more efficient manufacturing methods. At the time the only way american automakers thought they could battle that was to have the government put tariffs into place to raise the prices of foreign cars beyond the cost of most american cars instead of redesigning their lines and considering the trends. Now all the tariffs have almost all been removed and incomes are greater now as a generality the middle american family has greater buying power.

in such things as lexus. with even higher markups and heigher profit margins
