I’ve always known that the steering wheel is on the most advanced parts of the car, but i’ve never seen a full explanation of all the controls.

that’s cool
thats fuckin sweet, and complicated, race engineer sounds like a fucking sweet job besides being the driver
yeah it’s nuts…there is so much more to it (racing) than setting up the car and sending the driver out. Constant monitoring and adjustments keep these machines running at the edge of what is physically possible.
I forget how much they say the steering wheel costs…It’s insanely expensive.
I would totally fat finger a button and pop it in neutral or something silly.
Cool stuff!
Up to forty grand.

I’ve never seen a system breakdown quite like that one. Given the closing speeds in F1 you can really appreciate the multitasking / thought inertia the drivers have to maintain. Ill shit.
reminds me of this, lol
lol.
Anyone know where to get switches like those? I need micro switches that can possibly be soldered right to a board for a steering wheel application in a race car.
That’s last year’s wheel… which hilariously, is less complex than this year. This year you have the KERS system charging wheel on there as well, as well as KERS deployment, and DRS deployment (which they use EVERY LAP). In addition to that, some teams (mostly McLaren) have changed it so the upshift and downshift are 4 paddles (so there is a total of 6 paddles on the back of the wheel). Two clutch, two up, two down. Using the extra up and down paddles tweaks the engine maps slightly changing the engine map for different torque outputs based on conditions (tires, debris, rain, etc)
nice! do you know of any well know manufacturers for race car electrical parts? It would be sweet to get a sponsorship (fsae). I have to design our whole electrical system this year. We have a deustch sponsor for connectors, I just need to find a wire and component sponsor.
I wonder what f1 uses for their paddle shift switches. We were using a rotpot for the clutch modulation and some sort of micro switch for the paddles. I don’t like the switches we use for the paddles because there is no positive feel to know if you actually shifted or the co2 is just out/low
+1 for digikey.
That was the first thing that popped into my head…
As for mfgs, not really.
As for switches; it’s all in the switch used and the tactile force required to operate it; look for one with a fairly high force and then mount it close to the pivot point of the paddle hinge; this should help with the “feel” of the paddle.
Well its more of a ‘click’ I’d be looking for when it is depressed. No one else really has a problem with it so it’s almost a moot point. I like tactile feedback.
You guys don’t need more electronics on the car
Congrats in Germany BTW.
There wont be more electronics, just more efficient use of them!
and thanks!
Hey, I recognize all of those knobs in the middle
Incredible.
