Sounds like both your choices are going to suck for MPG.

+1, pathfinder is a good choice too. Same motor, more comfort.

It’s actually not THAT bad for having no cylinder deactivation and being a 5000lb AWD brick lol. During winter I get like 13-15 mpg depending on how long I let it warm up and traffic. Summer is usually 15-17 mpg. I’ve taken it to Long Island and it got like 18 or 19 mpg the whole way there going about 90mph. It’s tradeoffs. You get 400hp/400tq with AWD and ive never gotten stuck anywhere but you pay a little more for that luxury. Mine is also completely bone stock. I’m pretty sure if you had one tuned the power and mpg would be a little better. It runs pretty rich. Best advice I can give is to drive each one and see what you like better.

Yea pathfinders are nice and actually have quite a high towing capacity.

What about the grand cherokee line up?

I recently rented a Toyota Highlander and I thought it was fantastic.Drove it downtown friday and out to rochester Saturday and got roughly 20MPG,6 gallons is what I put back into it and this was with me taking full advantage of the sport mode transmission, lol. It was quite peppy as well,5k was the towing capacity.
