Habib's 89 Civic Si

I must be bored if I’m posting this lol. But since pretty soon I will be getting ready to work on the car again I figured I would post it up. I picked this car up for $500 bucks to replace my wrecked DX back in 2000 I think. The DX became a club racer so I took all the good parts left off it to get the Si back in shape. Raced it for several years till I hit another car at a track day at the end of 2004. Got the crazy idea to rebuild it for cheap during all of 2005, and it made a comeback for a few events before going back for some upgrades during the winter. Thats about where these pics start between 05/06.

Decided I wanted new headlights and to replace and repaint a few things on the nose. So that all came apart.

While nose was off I hit the chassis with protective paint & POR15 in some places since Hondas and rust go hand in hand. Its pretty well protected now to be honest. I at being well over 175K I decided to rebuild the tranny with just some new bearings and syncros. Since that was out, I took out a few dumb things like the battery tray, rad supports, etc. Sandblasted them and repainted those. Swapped intakes from a 2 1/2" up to a 3" since it was free. The following shot was just to show all that stuff.

Autox is really fucked up to your average person because of the mods your allowed to do within your class. The basic class I run in (STS) only allows engine bolt-ons, suspension stuff has to attach in the stock locations, and brakes can be upgraded but their size can not be increased. Another thing allowed is seats. Since I wanted to kill some weight, I invested in a set of Corbeau FX1 Pro’s. My carpet was screwed up, and I still had the old carpet from my DX which was removed when it became a race car. So getting ready for the seats I installed that, again since it was free lol.

For the 3rd time in the car’s history I was redoing the suspension. It already had poly bushings, a CRX HF front sway bar, a 22mm progress rear bar, mugen rear trailing arm bushings, and the usual front strut bar. I finally went with a set of real coilovers. These are from Progress suspension, they are their full race versions. Custom spring rates of 400f/450r (going to 450f/500r this year) and stiffer internal valving.

Getting it back together…

Finally got it home in time for the 2006 season. Did about 30+ races during the year.

Wheels are 15X7 with falken azenis. Alignment is usually 1/16th out in the front and like zero in the rear I think. Gotta corner weight the damn thing this year. Engine bolt-ons are the only really thing is had going for it, I’ve given up taking the car to PRP. All the front camber (3 degs front/around 2.5 deg rear, needs more) doesn’t make for good launches. I it ran a 16.1 a few years ago, way it setup now it might net a high 15. But can’t really say I built it for drag racing.

After blowing my wad on the car last year I just wanted to do a head rebuilt, change spring rates, and replace a few small things this year since the car is pretty much where I want it. But before we pulled the head, a leak down test revealed the #3 cyc was down 20-30 psi which blows. So now the bottom end is getting rebuilt as well. Thankfully A6 motors don’t cost a arm and a leg to get anything for them. Thanks for looking, I’m sure I’ll have some updates in a few months.

cool… the third pic makes it look like its being held up by a cardboard box…

 x eleventeen billiondy. I’m jealous!

I swear, I can NOT find a clean, unmolested (aka un-riced) '89-91 Civic Si anywhere out here (CA). :frowning: I want one so damn bad for a nice DD + mild STS car to let my girl get into AutoX (the 'vette is a little much  ). Hell, I even would use it at some of the venues around here I won’t take the 'vette to cuz they’re too small, too rough etc.

Very cool build, keep us posted.

Looks like a fun car!

good job Chris

Cleaned up nicely, wtg!

it is. I got to take a ride along for some funs runs at North Park.

huh huh you said blowing your wad…

j/k man looks like a nice racer.

Thanks for the replies! Usually anyone who’s willing to come out to a autox I’ll will let them take the car out on a fun run by themselves. Its not that impressive on paper, but its a freaking scream to drive. Though if your not use to the sway bar bias it will try to spin on you by the first turn hehe.

TJ - Wanna trade? lol. Yea half the reason I rebuilt it was because a clean chassis is so damn hard to come by. Plus the car is still super competitive in its class. And its cheap to run which is the biggest bonus. I still drive it around on the street a good bit, just not in the winter. Someday I plan to move up to something bigger and RWD, little more power, etc. But I’m keeping this one for the long haul.

I won’t have any major updates, but here are some older pics. First one is back in 2001. And yes those are VW wheels. You can also see the body with the original paint and some rust.

I will also vouch for this car’s fun factor on an auto-x track. : )

I got to go on some ride-alongs, but never got to drive… that might have to change this year ; ) I will need someone to warm the hoosiers up for me on the dub.

chris

I have gone for a ride in this beast! It was a freaking blast! it might not have a ton of power but damn is it fast through the turns

looks good

Chris - Man all you had to do was ask you can drive it lol. Yea if the numbers are low again for some events you’ll see me doing the dual ride thing again, I’m taking offers on codrives already

Whitey I remember comming back from my run with you and your comments were “Man you drifted longer than Cheeks did” haha. Hopefully I’ll see you out there this year!

hope my hatch becomes that clean. but then what would i rally cross, lol.

Yea I didn’t think you guys needed a dirt plow at the rallycross haha. It might even end up a bit lower this year. Not for looks, but to try for a little better camber on all four corners. There are a few rusted to hell DX shells I’m looking into as a rally beater, but thats still a bit off.

cars sick dude. can i put it on my 4th gen site. i’m startin a pittsburgh 4g’s section. cars clean.

lookin good man. well have to trade cars sometime for a fun run or two and compare times. id like to see how my times in my own car compare to what you can do in it.

btw, i still have those little connectors you gave me for my brake master cylinder.

Anytime Matt, long as I get to toss the lude around for a bit  And yea don’t sweat the MC connectors, I’ll get them someday.

About the Civic, I got word this week its finally got its own spot ready in the shop. Gonna try to visit it Saturday and get started. The spare head I was getting rebuilt had some issues with the valves so its taking longer to come back. Till I break into the motor, I’ll probably pull the race seats and try to move their mounting forward a little more (my chicken arms + no power steering + tight turns = the suck). Closer to the wheel the better. The new rear 500lb springs should arrive shortly. And I’m pretty positive I’m going to dump the stock upper suspension links in the rear with adjustable ones to get some more camber.

when was the last time you were down there? i want my car to have a spot, but i am on the “wait” list for like a year
