Anyone know or does decent work ? I’m looking to have my floors sanded and need a small area looked at that had slight water damage. I’ve seen many people say just get a sander and diy project but I don’t know how well I feel about it.
Total Sqft?
if you’re worried about using a sander to diy, don’t get a drum. less chance of screwing up with an orbital. its fairly inexpensive to rent and they usually include the hand sander for edges with the rental and you pay per sheet for sandpaper.
This. Drum sanders take a bit of a learning curve and you only get one chance to not screw it up.
Is this a fairly easy DIY for someone with decent mechanical aptitude? I have about 900sqft of hardwood to refinish and would rather tackle it myself than dish out $2000+ I was quoted by my neighbor who has his own refinishing company. He made it sound like the rental units are garbage and it will never look good without a professional doing it. I assume that he is trying to sell the job but I have no experience with refinishing.
I had this place to mine a few years back http://www.advantagehardwoodfloor.com/
To me, it was not worth my time and material costs compared to having them do it.
I’ll double check my measurements but It’s two rooms .
If you’re even somewhat good with your hands and aren’t inept at adjusting to how the floor is reacting on the fly its really easy not to mess up. It is hard, long work though.

The home depot rental units are really nice quality by the way.
Estimate but around 400 sq ft. I have two rooms 11x13 and 11x15 and a 3x3 area
Bump.
I need some work done, the problem is that I don’t have floors like any pictured here… I literally have trees on the ground that I stand on, lol.
Anyone have any recent experience? I’m NOT doing it myself.
I just did 1000 sqft of pine and oak. The pine was interesting as it was very prone to sanding marks. it took a lot of time to get it perfectly smooth for finishing.
@ieatpaint may be able to give you some good recommendations on who to call. (he personally does awesome work)
It’s not something I was willing to do on my own as it can be easily FUBAR’d. I have a guy through my aunt, his initial estimate was 2700 for 3 rooms (I don’t remember size of rooms offhand but my house is 1150 sq ft if that helps).
Anyways I paid him cash instead and it was 2200.
If you’d like PM me.
EDIT: If that seems high, I had others over 3 grand. Three guys were in my house for 3 days at 9 hours a day, so this isn’t something that’s done in an afternoon (if you want it to look good).
Yeah I realize it’s going to be a big job. One of the issues is that the boards have shrunk and gaps between them were never filled properly. There are also a few areas where the previous owner patched the floor with softwood.

local company and they do great work. I’ve personally had them refinish my entire first floor in my old house and it never looked better. They redid my parents floors too and they still look good over 15 years later.
Mine were this way as well. The old owner put new carpet over these beautiful floors. Any thing that was missing chunks/filler/gaps whatever the guys took care of.
I can also vouch for advantage hardwood. They have done a few jobs for me.
I used this guy - http://www.pkhardwood.com/
He refinished all my floors & installed a new floor in my kitchen matching the original strip flooring installed in the rest of the house.
@POOPRA did you find his pricing as good as his work?
Yeah he did good work and his pricing was right in line with the other quotes I received.
