Actually Gypsies do not hail from Romania, it is actually not really know where they come from. But it is believed their roots are in Hungary (which neighbors Romania to the North), and in the Middle East/India.
Yes, there are alot of Gypsies in Romania but they are not Romanian, you may be getting confused because their official name, bein Roma, is close.
And Romania was also Cummunist.
