so after 6+ years of 56k my mom is finally deciding to get high speed internet…
the only stipulation is that she wants to keep AOL, it’s all she’s ever used, and for 6 years she still doesnt know how to use it right…she’s too stubborn and computer illiterate to want to switch to anything else and have to learn her email address and password all over again…yes, even that is asking too much from her when it comes to computers…
but any way, i’m just trying to figure out who has gone this route, or at least looked into it…and whether it be through adelphia, DSL, verizon high speed, etc etc…i need to know:
what’s faster than what
what costs what
what kind of package deals you can get where AOL and the new high speed provider are combined to be a bit cheaper than just paying for each separately…
and anything else you think i should know…
i by no means am a computer nerd either, so i’m putting all my faith in the geeks of NYSpeed…
powerlink w/ digital cable = the same as powerlink and regular cable…
powerlink = teh fast
dsl = the cheaper
I dont have dsl because… I dont ahve a home phone.
Honestly if she wants to stick with AOL. Get AOL’s DSL package. Shouldn’t cost much more. Not the fastest though at all. But for the price it’s not bad.
we’ll prob go the DSL route then since the price dif is little to none from what i’m seeing here…
and it doesnt have to be the fastest out there…right now i’m using 56k remember? anything will be worlds faster…but just so i know, how does dsl aol compare to say, the T1’s they probably use at my school? or cable at friends’ houses?
Wait for a deal at circuit city…free modem (mail in rebate $80) 3 months of powerlink @ like 34.95 and then a circuit city gift card after mail in rebate. I’m not sure if they still have that deal but keep checking their sunday ad. Leasing a cable modem is a waste of money in my opinion.
dsl is a lot faster then 56k, but its no adelphia. if your dsl is setup properly you dotn have to use aol, u can use internet explorer and aim and let her use aol when she watns too
DSL can be basically anything, from high speed to dial up speeds…
Verizon has a DSL package aimed @ AOL users, its like $14.95/mo and only 256/256 i think… Hell of a deal for a always on connection and freeing up the phone line.
If you get AOL’s DSL package its through verizon,I had it and it wasnt bad,you dont have to use the AOL software if you dont want to.I always used the windows XP PPPoE connection terminal,just stuck my AOL user and pass in there and it worked great.My parents still use AOL,it costs like $3 a month for a certain amount of minutes.
I do a 1.5mbps/256 deal through verizon which is no adelphia but im quite satisfied being that its half the price.
it wasnt bad. it wasnt quick either i heart adelphia more. i have aol still so i occasionally run aol through adelphia.its faster then aol highspeed for sure.
i have no idea what things like 256/256 and 1.5mbps/256 mean…this all is babble to me…
for those of you that have used aol dsl, what did you pay monthly?
waiting for circuit city to have a special isn’t an option, because once those 3 months for free are up, she’s not gonna wanna pay for anything else…she’s a cheap Pollock what can i say…
