How do you define "sports car?"

just curious what kinda responses i would get on here…

a recent convo. with a guy that likes to tell people i’m his friend (91mr2) and i were just talking about sports cars today, and how many of them we’ll see 10 to 20 years down the road…

that got us to talking about sports cars of the early 90’s and late 80’s…because i had called the Z32 a true sports car for its time, while he disagreed…yet at the same time called the RX7 a sports car, and the MR2…and Supra was also in the non-sports car category according to him.

i think that all 4 are sports cars…but thats just me…

i’m not posting to start shit with him, or argue one opinion better than another, but rather to just get more opinions and see what other people on here think…

what, in your eyes, does it take for a car to be a sports car (given the time it was in production obviously)? what came close, but wasn’t really a sports car? what must every sports car have to be considered a sports car?

exotics need not apply…

out of your list, i think the only one NOT a sports car is the mr2 IMO. its too much of a compact car and a four banger

Haha. Good thread, and good first reply, haha.

the mr2 turbo could be…and the mid engine layout works to its advantage as a sports car…but i just dont see how it can be considered a sports car…and not the supra or Z32…but this is just for opinions, not to prove somebody right or wrong joe…dont cry…

i define a sports car as a car that presents “the whole pacakge” something with appealing styling, a powerful motor, great handling, semi-luxurious interior, 4wheel disc(lol) and all that good stuff. mr2 is close, but still kind of econobox-ish

then why in gods name do they call all fbodies sports cars?..and i happen to agree with focus somewhat on which is which here. of the four cars listed i believe the rx7,300zx,and supra were imsa raced quite often. mr2 is probably the most borderline sports car i can think of it either is to some or isn’t to others. the mr2 has great style (atleast the second gen), the turbo is fun and as stated MR gives it the handling aspect.

I like the sports cars that go way back to their roots, ie. all about the business.

I like the older cars like the Datsun 240-26-280 up till the 280zx’s. They are simple, and more about the driving experience than having all sorts of electronic crap to get in the way. I am not one for luxury in a fast car, I just want to go fast. The Supra and 300ZX all seemed to be a tad on the heavy side, and the 300zx started with the electronic stuff like HICAS etc. I have a tendancy to like the older, more simplistic platforms.

big heavy bog 4dr sedan with leather…heated seats…sunroof…and poor handling…oh wait…I would say usually a 2dr coupe with a nice balance of useful power…handling…driveability…ie…300zxs on a diet…m3…Older Celicas AE86…Old Zs…Vettes…on a fine line Mustang maybe…MR2s stuff like that…but now its seems the smaller sport comapcts EVOs and Imprezas…SRT-4 :gay:…Hondas are taking over SOME of the sports car world…some will say NSX…but thats more of teh Japanese Supercar ish…obcourse its a sports car but maybe even higher

a lot of what was said before but i think an important factor IMHO is it needs to be a 2 door

so an STi or evo is not a sports car, despite being “based” on a race car?

It has more agressive styling and handling that your standard car, It has more Power than your standard car, and has the ability to be modified to the endths degree

i would say it needs to have 2 doors to be a sports car, i would call evo, or sti a sports sedan, i like sports cars thats why i never liked 4 doors on a car, exept the EVO , i really need one of those when i have my first born.

i think theres a big difference between a modifiers sport compact and a sports car. Sports cars SHOULD(i know tons of companies have broke this over and over) be only 2 seats. That is a huge part of it. The design of the car should be overall based upon it having good handling and enough power to seperate from ur average grocery getter. I think that the mr2 definitely is a sports car because it is a 2 seater that is performance oriented. Evos and Sti’s are cool and fast and performance oriented, but they are sport compact cars and not sports cars.

like i said IMHO no

:word:

It must be at least in the top twenty of production “performance” cars at time of production.
My definition of performance includes all aspects of handling, stopping, and accelerating.
Exotics are in their own league and are not to be included in the top twenty production cars.
That is my definition.

in my mind, the general rule of thumb would be… a sleek looking 2 door, rwd, lightwieght, that can handle. of course, there are exceptions to every rule…

I agree that they should be rwd, but car companies suck. I wouldnt say that a n/a 3kgt isnt a sports car just because its fwd so theres definitely exceptions to that

Sports car is a 2-seater with a high-volume production based drivetrain. May or not be fast. Examples: Miata, Corvette, Nissan Z. Muscle car: big engine stuffed in 4+ seater production platform. Example: 300C SRT8. Pony car: 4+ seater production drivetrain put in a smaller platform. May or may not be high performance: Mustang.

And so on.

Rich

A sports car is a car the performs better than a “normal” car, which is to say that its drivability is a little harsh, its suspension a little too stiff, it revs to fast, the seats aren’t huge and cushy. It’s the kind of car that most people want but can’t have because it isn’t practical. I don’t think you can narrow it down by weight, size, power, seats, cost, etc. Because there are always examples that go agaist the grain.
