an SE-R is NOT a sports car :), reguardless of the use it sees: i.e. takes part in “sports for cars”.

For CURRENT cars the Miata is the most genuine example.

the definition used to be “an open top roadster, that, in a pinch could be used for racing.” so that eliminates some of the choices above (the open-top raodster, not the race part.)
