How true is this? RX7 to return 2017

Not sure how true this is. Also I know they stopped the production of Rotary engines, so what engine will they use? I see a 1.6l… so does that mean they will produce the rotary again? I dont see this happening with the way fuel economy is and how everyone is about mpg.

Also not sure how creditable this site is, I never go on it and it was posted by someone else.

Mazda will bring back the much-loved RX-7 in 2017, with less weight, less complexity and a greater emphasis on driver involvement

Sounds like a good idea if they do!
Id take a 7 over an 8 any day.

While I would love to see the RX-7 back in production, it will be hard to replace the timeless design of the FD. I don’t think anything could ever replace that.

Also, I wouldn’t put much stock in something that is 4-5 years out and has been rumored about 1 billion times before

The RX7 is dead. Time to build another awesome car that people will love even more. Doesn’t need the same name.

Me as well, but they need to figure something out about the rotary engine if they want to bring it back… they struggle to make 20mpg with no turbo. you can get a v8 producing more power with a better mpg. It will be looked down on if they dont change that by 2017. I cant imagine where they will be with most the cars by then with mpg

Only thing that would lead me to believe about another rx7 would be the 50 year anniversary

Do you know what “RX” stands for?

Rotary Sports Car number seven.

While I’d love to see a rotary RX7 again one day, I’ll believe it when I see it…

competition for the BRZ

MPG requirements are going to be tough unless they work some magic.

2017!!!

I thought it stood for Rotary Experiment

They should just produce it LS powered right out of the gate this time…

Projecting 5 years into the future? Why don’t they just tell us when they plan on building a flying car. 5 years is fine but keep it under wraps until public debut of a prototype

I was promised fully electric cars in the second grade by the time I was 20. That was ten years ago. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves with flying cars.

What do you mean like the Newer Chevy Camaro? How long were they pitching that car to be coming out? I believe they had talks about the new body for like 5-6 years before it actually came out.

This would be sweet if it does come out altho the timeless design of the fds will be hard to top.

Nobohiru Yamamoto, who is now head of the MX-5 program, told Australia’s The Motor Report that the RX-7 will use a stretched version of the Miata platform, and weigh roughly as much as the 2775 lb Toyota 86. Japanese market versions will have a small rear seat, while North American versions will be two-seaters.

Power will come from the new 16X rotary engine, a naturally aspirated unit capable of nearly 300 horsepower. Yamamoto said that a large single turbo caused too much lag, and a sequential twin-turbo setup like the previous RX-7 was “not ideal”. But Yamamoto didn’t rule out a turbo either for future production. But even in naturally aspirated form, the power to weight ratio should exceed the last RX-7 sold in North America.

So Mazda is trying to compete with a car that will be 5+ years old by the time they have their car available? Way to stay ahead of the game Mazda.
