Impreza SES light

Car info: 1995 Subaru Impreza Wagon AWD, 176K miles, auto
Symptoms: Running rough, check engine light blinking.

Started car up to move it, running fine then after a few minutes the check engine light came on and started to run rough, loss of power. Check engine started blinking on/off. Its acting like a bad coil or possibly a fouled plug. Car has not been driven much since spring time. Only started to move around the driveway once in a while.

Is there a way to tell what code or codes are been thrown? Does it sound like a bad coil?

That would be my guess. Check for spark to see if thats even an issue. Does it start fine then rough every time, or is it now running rough on startup?

Only other guess would be headgasket; car should heat up, white smoke for coolant, black for oil. Check for those signs.

Does the 95 use OBDI? Find a reader

First step is to pull diag codes. You’re in luck, it’s easy to do no real tools needed except maybe a phillips screwdriver.

Oh, and the ability to count.

runs rough on start up, no smoke. I will try to pull code/codes tonight after work.

EDIT: can the coil be tested?

Ok, I have two green and two black connectors under the dash. When I connect the black connectors, put key in ignition I get a beeping noise, is this normal? I didn’t turn the key on because I don’t know if that’s normal…

EDIT: also the black connectors have 2 wires each and the green connectors only have one wire each…

Sounds like a clogged cat

yes the coil can be tested check the primary coil resistance and secondary coil resistance

Did you have the door open? :mamoru:

But I don’t recall any extra noises when I pull them on my car.

it’s misfiring hence the blinking. my guess is bad gas/tainted gas from sitting for so long.

pulled plugs front two wet, back two looked good. Tested spark, back two strong, passenger front weak and drivers front none. Time for new coil.

After some trouble shooting it ending up being a bad Ignition Module, little fuckers are expensive. Back to running smooth and waiting for snow.
