Installing new stick down tiles over old ones?

I want to change the floor color in my rental. Right now I have old stick down tiles that are in fine shape, but they’re blue and look like crap.

I want to put in the same type of flooring, but want to make sure it’s okay to install the new ones right over the old ones. Anyone do this with success/failure?

I believe there might be a couple layers of flooring down already, but I really don’t want to rip up the whole floor if I don’t have to.

It can be fairly easy to remove the old tile if they were just peel and stick. If you want it done right, you’ll pull the old stuff up. But as long as the old stuff is flat and still adhering the way it should, you would probably be fine to lay the new stuff on top.

If you do decide to remove it, a wet towl and an iron work wonders.

this…we used a hoe to pry them up, I believe we just mopped the floor underneath, let it dry and slapped the new tile down.

agree with all prior staements…only problem with going over is that the sticky shit only lasts so long so if the old shit is starting to get shitty the new one will go faster…heat guns work wonders on removal and on cutting the new tiles

they should probably come up pretty easy
or atleast peal the old tile up, subfloor over the old shit quick n then lay down the new floor

Do any doors open over top of this floor?

Yes just one. It’s a wooden interior door though.

The last time I tried to remove the stick down tile, it came up in little inch by inch pieces. I’ll give it a try with one of the removal tools and see how it goes. Gotta wait until the end of August tho, so don’t look for any updates for a while, lol.

Paulo - can you explain the whole process with the wet towel and iron.

Lay a wet towel down on the tile, use the iron to heat it up. It melts the glue so you can just peel them back. The wet towel is so you don’t melt or burn the tile. I used to do this to replace individual tiles and it worked well. But perhaps a heat gun is a bit faster.

Yeah I’m sure it will work, but probably take hours, lol. I searched a few videos on youtube and found some with heat and a putty knife… seemed to work well. Have you ever had problems with the left over glue on the surface? Do you have any recommendations to prep the surface for the new tile once the old ones are off?

Clean the existing tiles very good.
Put the new tiles down but do not line up the seams… overlap the tiles.
Done.

As long as the old tiles aren’t textured a lot, rising, or dirty, just putting the new ones down won’t hurt. The best I’ve ever gotten tiles to stick is to each other.

tear it all up… put down some 57 cent ceramic from home depot and forget about it forever…this is what i’ve done on my rental

whats the point in paying a $1 sf every couple years replacing lick and stick tiles?
