IT Tool kit?

If you were a systems administrator, what kind of tool kits would you want to have?

I’m not talking about software, but hardware.

Screwdrivers, Tone out kits, etc…

Every company I work for seems to have a different idea of what is a good kit to have.

My kit includes:
USB floppy drive,
2 X 4GB USB flash drive,
160GB External hard drive,
several spare patch cables,
Cisco cable,
screwdriver kit with torx wrench and precision tools,
tone-out cable finder,
RJ-45 cable tester,
spare PCI NIC,
RJ-45 and RJ-11 crimper tool with ends for both,
A CD Kit with sorted software tools and media,
A little bag of random computer case screws.

Anyone have any other items to add?

Cisco Cable
Null Model Cable(Nortel switches and random other ish)
Serial Cable(HP Switches)
Cross over cables
Screwdriver set
USB Jump drive for porn…

I don’t really fuck with PC/wiring issues anymore so I have no need for the other stuff.

It all depends on the scope of work. If you cover everything from patching to the systems themselves then

A console cable to every device on the network.

Laptop with serial port (you wouldnt think how hard it is to get this from some IT departments)

Cross over cable

At least 1 GB Jump Drive

Crimper tool

Fluke Networks Link Runner

Spare 5 , 7, and 14’ patch cords

Digital toner (analog ones suck in datacenters)

External hard drive (~100 GB is more than fine

Basic tools (screwdriver, wire cutters, wire stripper)

Vendor contact numbers if you outsource any hardware or work

Maps of cabling and room locations taped in the network closets on each floor

Also, if you do a lot of hardware mounting: POWER SCREW DRIVER or DRILL is a godsend on long installs

amazing driver.

Wow. You geeks are hardcore. I was expecting like ovaltine, belt full of cell phones and beepers, contact solution, and the biggest ipod on the market.

Don’t you have some tanks of nitrogen to go fill or something? :blah:

Ya I know. But I would prefer carrying around only a laptop with a serial port. My last company wanted to get everyone IBMs and the micro dells so we had to carry that thing around all the time. Being a network engineer, I need to have a serial port built in for ease of use.

So far everything listed, but I don’t really “carry” any of it around, we just order a bunch of each and keep 1 or 2 at each site. Makes travel lighter and easier.

:word:

There was a time I carried all sorts of crap…Now I have 3 cables and my laptop in backpack…

Agreed, I do carry an ethernet cable with me, a USB - Serial, and a regular usb cable for my Blackberry/Bluetooth headset to charge and thats it.

20k in usb dongles
mac laptop with software that uses the 20k in software dongles
lots of stuff from wiebetech

Ya. These tools I have access to but when I go do work I only have a cross over cable, patch cord, second ac adapter for my laptop so I dont need to bring the one at my desk, and a usb cable to charge my phone if needed.

I just have a 16GB jump drive with all my software on it. And a pocket knife.
