There is some kind of little slot at the base of the key on the tab. I imagine that is where the chip is. It doesn’t look as though it is imbedded in the key itself.

Yep, if you look at the base of the plastic/rubber part (facing down toward the metal key part) you’ll see the little outline of the chip.
