Let's build a PC...

your kidding right? ati is better for lower resolutions? Have you ever used one, or read a review for those cards?

the reviews of the 4870 (according the this one and all others that are out there) have the card about 5-10% quicker than the gtx260 (per game) while about the same 10% slower than the 280. the 4870/4870x2 cards are better for higher resolutions, aa/af. Obviously there are a few (litterally) where the 4870 series aren’t on top…but not nearly enough for you to say that the cards are bad at high resolutions.

btw, after looking at those pics again, what are the specs of the computer your using now (specifically motherboard model)?
The smartest thing you can do burnt_toast is read the reviews…

I never said anywhere that they’re bad at high resolutions, just that nvidia seems to handle them better. i don’t use crysis or 3dmark as a benchmark for video cards b/c nvidia will win almost every time. also, comparing a gtx260 to a hd4870x2 is completely unfair due to single card vs dual card and price wise as well. and sli > crossfire in terms of stability and driver support

I have an 8800GT and a x1950 pro for sale… make offers. Both are very capable video cards

i went to cyber power built mine in the past but they have some great combos at a great price just IMO and i got some free stuff!!! and it looks sweet1111

Well, since this was bumped yesterday… I ended up ordering a cheap-o ‘phenom’ setup. i needed something else until end of november/december ish. actually, spent about 300$ on it (mobo, ram, cpu - 350$ overnight) Picked up the new 125w phenom 9950, a micro atx foxconn board, and 4gb of OCZ ram. plus i have 50$ in mir to send in. overall extremely pleased with the performance, especially at stock clocks (compared to my previous q6700). this is also now paired with half the ram, and instead of 2x7200.11 drives in raid0, a single velociraptor. Kind of wanted to try something new, and for the price, why not. Also found a case for the winter build: NZXT Whisper case

So if your still considering doing something like a q6600 or w/e, i would also consider an amd machine…

ended up moving my other pc into an htpc case, and have the 1tb drive in that on a lan connection. now w/ wireless n, i transferred a 15GB blu ray movie at a constant 10MB/s. Tis nice…
