I have been using this wheel for a wile and i finally got fed up with the play in it the no resistance and the fifth gear hang up. Enjoy!

G25 Shifter Mods - Illustrated, step by step resource page for every G25 shifter mod

There are a number of scattered threads about different mods for the G25 shifter, so I figured we can all make one thread that categorizes and aggregate all the mods here, and provides all the links and resources for anyone interested in improving their G25 shifter.

Some of these mods have been discussed in great lengths, and some of these are my own that I would like to share. Please feel free to add your pictures, links, ideas, and any new mods you come up with.

Goes without saying, but just in case…
Performing these mods may void your G25 warranty, or permanently damage your G25 shifter. If you choose to perform any of these mods, please be careful and do so at your own risk!

http://forum.rscnet.org/images/smilies/trophy.gif “No Clicking” Mod
Difficulty: Medium
Old Theory-
This mod reduces or removes the clicking sound when shifting from gear to gear. A piece of foam is inserted into the spring that presses a small metal ball against 3 groves in the metal side plates. Aparently the noise is caused by the spring hitting the metal ball and not the metal ball hitting the metal plate. The foam absorbs the sound and prevents the spring from touching the metal ball, therefore eliminating the click (almost). This also adds some extra resistance to the shifter when switching gears.

Updated Mod by fdkrew-
Removes dead space between ball and plastic housing to remove clicking sound.

http://forum.rscnet.org/images/smilies/trophy.gif Realistic Shifter Resistance
Difficulty: Medium
This mod increases the resistance of the shifter to give it a more realistic feeling.

This is very similar to the “No Clicking Mod”, except that it focuses on making the
spring that locks the ball into place much harder to compress
http://www.bedoworks.com/images/g25/resistance.PNG

Although this sounds easy in theory, there are a number of issues to be aware of.
Since the added force on the spring that clicks the ball into place is much greater,
you have to make sure you use some real hard packing material such as plastic or metal,
otherwise over time the spring will find its way back into the housing and the resistance
will lessen.

If the spring is not allowed to compress fully, the ball will not be able to clear the
groves properly, and this will cause extra strain on the metal plates, causing them to move
apart as you shift back and forth. To avoid this, consider bolding on additional reinforcement
to the metal plates to keep them in place. You can think of it as a strut for the housing http://forum.rscnet.org/images/smilies/wink.gif
(See photos for pic)

To make room for the strut, there are several notches that need to be filed down from the upper
portion of the plastic case.
(See photos for pic)

In addition, if the plates are moving apart while shifting gears, the potentiometer that keeps
track of the “vertical” gears may not work well if the shifter is switched to sequential mode.
It seem that it is very sensitive to how far it travels to activate the Up/Down gears since in
sequential mode, the shifter doesn’t travel all the way. With this mod, in sequential mode,
when the shifter is positioned in the up or down shift, because the ball will not be in one of
the groves, the plates may have moved apart enough to offset the potentiometer causing it not
to detect the up/down change. In other words, with this mod sequential shifting may not work!

Materials

  1. Small piece of metal or plastic enough to pack inside the housing of the ball spring

http://forum.rscnet.org/images/smilies/trophy.gif Stiffer Spring Mod
Difficulty: Medium
This mod stiffens the spring in the shaft to avoid accidentally pressing the shifter inwards or in reverse while switching gears.

Replace the original spring of the shaft with a stiffer one. I couldn’t find a stiffer spring or invest the time to go buy one, so in the picture you’ll notice that I added a second smaller spring to add the extra resistance. I imagine a proper stiff spring will work best.

For an alternate method, see the second discussion link.

http://forum.rscnet.org/images/smilies/trophy.gif More Resistance in Neutral Mod
Difficulty: Medium
This mod adds more resistance to the shifter when moving it from side to side.
A rubber band is wrapped around the centering spring to add the resistance.

http://forum.rscnet.org/images/smilies/trophy.gif Reduced wobble in Neutral Mod
Difficulty: Medium
This mod removes the wobbling of the shifter when it is in neutral position, and gives it a stiffer and solid feel.

There are two parts to this mod. The first part is to remove the wobbling caused by the space between the shaft’s plastic housing and the shaft itself. Inserting a small piece of plastic film to fill the space fixes this. (See 1st photo)
http://www.bedoworks.com/images/g25/shaft.PNG

The second part is to eliminate the play in the centering spring. The centering spring wraps around the plastic shaft housing and provides resistance as the top portion moves from side to side. The top portion which touches the edges of the centering spring is actually about a millimeter thicker than the bottom portion which the spring uses to grip its other end. Shaving the top portion ever so slightly until the play is removed does the trick.

http://forum.rscnet.org/images/smilies/trophy.gif Reduces Play in 3rd and 4th gear Mod
Difficulty: Easy
This mod reduces the play of the shifter while in 3rd and 4th gear caused by the design of the shifter. Line the inside of the plastic housing where the shifter operates with a piece of rubber or foam. The metal shaft should not touch the plastic housing when it is in gear. It should touch the lining. When the shifter is in 3rd and 4th gear, the pressure against the padding will prevent it from wobbling side to side, giving it a solid feel. This will also add additional noise reduction when shifting hard as the metal will not slam against the plastic.

Difficulty: Easy
This mod replaces the original knob of the shifter with a custom one.
I’ve seen this somewhere, but cannot find a picture. Please help.

Materials

  1. Flat head screwdriver to remove clip-off stock gear knob cap (I just did it with my fingernail)
  2. Phillips head screwdriver to unfasten stock knob
  3. Replacement knob (and adapter if knob does not fasten straight onto shaft - my adapter required a 3mm alan key)

This post is a work in progress. I will be updating this post as we gather more resources and mods.

pretty cool  still want to try one of these, but it seems like it would take a little getting used to since you don’t really have anykind of feedback from a vehicle

It really not 2 close 2 a car feel but for online or single player use its so much fun…and it saves on gas 2 when u wanna romp some donuts or burnouts:)

nice

i need a cheap seat/mount…any suggestions?

nerds

i see some pretty cool 1’s on ebay or maby you can look on other forum’s and do a diy?

if u had 1 u would fall in love with the right game

i Always wanted one, i have the momo steering wheel and pedals w/ paddle shifters and it makes it so fun, but G25 would be insane! lol but too bad my computer is slower now and hates things lol! DAMN time to upgrade! I wish they had this for the 360 that would be sweet!

it might work for the 360

it would be nice if a place rented things like steering wheels and shit.

With most peripherals like that, You use the hell out of it for a month or two, then it just collects dust lol Those things aren’t cheap either

well i payed 350 for mine like 3 years ago and im still using it alot! it never gets old and its really addicting. Now there about 250 bucks on ebay. I usually play it once in a wile durring the summer but now That winter in nearing im all over it:)

they dont to my knowledge

Yeah I have the xbox 360 wheel and it’s pretty shitty. I also have the driving force gt and it’s alot better than the 360’s wheel. The dfGT doesn’t work on the 360 either :(.

Thinking about selling the xbox360 wheel.

o yea its been a wile since i looked at the list of systems it worked with …maby you can look up program that will make it compatiable

Sounds like something smart joy should come out with. They always made cool adapters like mouse and kb attachment for the xbox…

Cool, the new version of GTR2 came out called GTR Evolution. We should get another nyspeed server going.

Once I get PS3 I’ll ditch the DFP for a G25. It will blow it out of the water.

SWEET!!! Time to start modding my G25.
