• Classic rides meet modified monstersPolice report only minor incidents at car show
By Erin L. Nissley
STATE COLLEGE — Police in State College and at Penn State were ready for incidents relating to a car show whose reputation preceded it, with staffing levels similar to those for home football games.
It turns out that they didn’t need it. During its two-day stop at the Bryce Jordan Center, the Modified Madness car show brought relatively few complaints. Most of the few complaints were related to noise and traffic.
The call volume for State College police was only half of what they received during Blue-White weekend, according to Sgt. Chris Fishel.
The car show featured customized cars, sport utility vehicles and trucks as well as pop music, scantily clad women and a handful of semi-celebrities. The biggest reported problem was congestion along Park Avenue on Saturday that police said was caused by participants waiting to register for the show.
University police handed out at least two citations for lewd conduct Saturday when officers observed two women lifting their shirts and exposing their breasts. State College police received calls about drag racing along University Drive, Windmere Drive and Warner Boulevard.
“But we weren’t able to actually catch anyone doing that,” Fishel said.
Police had prepared for the worst after hearing about problems experienced by other Pennsylvania towns that have hosted the show. At the Harrisburg show last year, more than 130 people were arrested, mostly for underage drinking and drag racing. In Carlisle, police reported similar problems when the show was in town.
Maybe they found a new home. A lot of people I talked to were pretty please considering it was a whole new attempt on the show. There were some issues that need to be worked out like the traffic on site for judging, but I sure CP will hopfully work that out. They seemed to address a lot of issues from last year’s harrisburg show. IE, the burn out competition was outside, there was grass field parking compared to sitting on concrete all day. :dunno: I’m still all screwed up and exhausted right now. Maybe I can gather my thoughts better later.
your hair dryer in the morning far superceeds the annoyance of me… write that down
:finger2:
!!!
Yea i think everything went very well cept for the traffic part. Harrisburgh had like 6 roll-in rows compared to this weekends 2… and an additional asian drive through judging tent wouldve helped on-site traffic. Downtown really helped to provide a venue for underages to have a place to hang out and for all us old heads to get cruuunk in da club. Whitey is a one-man party. Sorry I missed the drama, I got cho back nucca!!
