MOTOGP: Texas Bound In 2013
The MotoGP World Championship will visit the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas starting in 2013.
SPEED Staff | Posted April 12, 2011 Austin, TXThe freshly dubbed ‘Circuit of the Americas’ has officially netted itself a second major international event as confirmation came this afternoon that the MotoGP World Championship will be headed to Austin, TX in 2013.
The announcement of the 10-year-agreement is a major coup for the brand-new venue as MotoGP is widely considered the second biggest international motorsports series trailing only F1. Landing both championships right off the bat lends considerable legitimacy to the project.
The Circuit of the Americas is set to become only the fourth venue in the United States to ever host a Motorcycle Grand Prix World Championship round, joining Daytona International Speedway, Laguna Seca, and Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The United States currently hosts two MotoGP rounds.
The championship has visited Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca uninterrupted since 2005, the year it replaced World Superbike at the spectacular circuit, ending a ten-year drought during which the Motorcycle Grand Prix World Championship did not race in the States.
Indianapolis Motor Speedway joined the tour in 2008, marking the first motorcycle race at the fabled venue since its first month of operation one hundred years earlier.
Whether or not Austin is set to replace of one these two events (Indy being considered the likely target) or move the USA closer to equal terms with MotoGP-mad Spain, which will host four rounds this season, has not yet been made clear.
While the race in 2013 will be a first for Texas, the state already boasts an impressive MotoGP lineage. 1993 500GP World Champion Kevin Schwantz, one of the sport’s all-time most popular riders, hails from Houston, Texas. In addition, two current MotoGP aces, ‘The Texas Tornado’ Colin Edwards and ‘The Texas Terror’ Ben Spies, are locals.
While 37-year-old Edwards is nearing the end of a decorated career that includes two Superbike World Championship crowns, the highly touted Spies, at 26-year-old and entering his second MotoGP season, is just beginning to tap into his potential. Already a three-time AMA Superbike champ, one-and-done World Superbike king, and the 2010 MotoGP Rookie of the Year, Spies is expected to be positioned as a legitimate title contender in 2013 when the series first visits his home state.
