A 89 CRX with a automatic is not a sports car, when you hit the gas it doesnt really go, and good luck throttle steering that rig with the slushbox.
Remember you do not steer with the wheel, you only present a direction change with the wheel and then you “steer” with the brake and gas. With a automatic you lose alot of that ablitiy.
can either of you read? i never said any Civic-based automobile is a sports car. Because they’re not. Storamin, you’re a homo. My automatic CRX was transportation and nothing else. Your 318is might have had a manual tranny, but it takes more than as third pedal to make a sports car. My Geo had a third pedal.
JDMCivic, again: never said my CRX was a sports car. The argument could probably be made that the Si was a sporty car, but even that’s a bit of a stretch. Your Civic is also not a sports car. It’s a quick econobox modified for a purpose. All the Jay-Dee-Em tightness in the world won’t make it a sports car.
what i enjoy is going to the link, and the first think i see is:

cherb: RIIIIIIIIIIICE. That wing belongs on a Boeing 747.
05xrunner: Dude your car is fuckin gay lookin…And you look like a idiot
egydude15: i got new pics of my car with the new rims. come check them out
My intitials are JDM(Josh daniel Matta) the car has none of that bullshit on it.
Did you not read the diffention of a “sports” car, my car fall underneath that. Those defintions were pulled up on google, i didnt make them up.
Lets see i have Double Wishbones, a Dohc motor, short gearing, LSD, low weight, great brakes and lots of tire. The car fit the defintion, in fact alot of cars do.
What really makes a sports car. It cant be power cause a Miata is for sure a sport car and would getten eaten alive agaisnt a Honda Odyssey in a straight line.
It cant be out right grip or braking cause old british roadsters a sports cars, but have shitty ass brakes, and lively handling which is to say it was predictable, but that said Odyssey can out handle and out brake it.
So does 2 seats make it a sports car?, well i guess RX-8s, Evos, STIs, M3s the list goes on arent sports car then.
You see what i am saying you really cant define what it is, you can try but there is way to much gray area unless you follow those definitions.
you read the Grassroots article on the Odyssey too? lol.
I guess the term “sports car” is really a subjective one. Some would say that it is any car that’s fast and handles well. I say that it’s based on intent of the manufacturer. A Jaguar E-type is a sports car even though a new Civic SI (not a sports car) crushes it in every way. A Civic SI is a sporty car, a sport compact, or some other lesser term, IMO.
Any BMW 3-series other than an M3 is a luxury compact. It might have a stick shift and RWD, but it wasn’t created to be a sports car.
lol…and sorry for the JDM thing… i see those initials and have a knee-jerk reaction. My realistic dream car would be another 88-91 CRX, with a D16A3 and a suspension, but i still wouldn’t call it a sports car.
Wow i must say i am impressed that you read GRM, but i actually got that from Car and Driver when the 2 gen Ody came out, and ran like a 15.7 in the quarter.
Member of what club MYL?lol
No, actually i have been wanting to get that damn grand am to follow me and sucker him into going though a turn to fast(causeing the car to wreck). So i dont have to see that annoying ass piece of shit anymore. He lives like a mile from me and the damn thing does catch your eye and then makes you want to puke.
If you are asking about sports car i stil agree to disagree with blayner, but i see his side, its just there is no real “cut off”. My civic would bring a smile to anyones face that drive and knows cars, trust me a couple members on her have seen it run at autocrosses, ridden in it, and few have driven it. O5Xrunner, HwH22hx , germ, habib88, jim etc etc can vouch that is one hell of car to drive/ride in. ALot of cars on this board the same can be said for, and yes i condisder them sports car.
lol… i’m just impressed i can read… i went to shaler, you know…
I read GRM and Top Gear… used to read Sport Compact Car, but few of the cars in there are compacts lately. I agree with you that a tiny Civic with a great suspension and engine is an awesome car. One of my favourite cars that I’ve owned was a 1984 Civic 1500S. But when I hear sports car, i think Supra, Elise, RX7… purpose-manufactured vehicles, not good cars that were modified into performance vehicles. It’s all semantics though.
automatic honda, manual geo, manual reno. i see a trend here… don’t you have a pizza to deliver?
like you said, that geo wasn’t a sports car. then again, it wasn’t classified as such and hasn’t won many accolades as a sports sedan… which the 3 series has, 1992-2005. what has the whole objective of the 3 series been? luxury sports sedan, which it has accomplished with flying colors. that’s what i look for in a car, i want something that drives nice but still has comforts. something i can take to beaverun and not get laughed at.
i’d take a 5 speed 318 over an auto honda anyways. autos… that’s not really driving, you’re just steering and mashing a pedal.
it was never a matter of comparison. i was stating that your slow-as-fuck 318 wasn’t a sports car by any definition of the phrase. Don’t use accolades showered upon the M3 or even the 325 in defence of BMW’s bargain basement 318.
I’d love to get a 318ti and toss an M3 engine in it. Until said engine swap, the 318 would be considered a passenger car and nothing more.
hey noob… i had a turbocharged Mercury Capri also. And a 16v MkII VW GTi. My lowly Reno has the same power numbers as your “sports car” 318is had, and about a hundred less pounds of bulk to haul around. I’m not saying my car IS a sports car, i’m saying a 318is ISN’T.
i’d say “sports car” is subjective, whereas “minivan” isn’t… there are some cars which are definitely “sports cars”, a Corvette, a Viper… but generally, an argument can be made to include or exclude nearly any car.
