Toyota has sparked yet more Supra speculation this week, releasing a shadowy teaser of a new coupe concept it has designed for Sony Entertainment’s popular Gran Turismo 6.

The concept will join Mercedes AMG’s retro-futuristic concept as part of the Gran Turismo Vision project, which sees carmakers collaborating with Polyphony Digital on special models for the new game.

Details for Toyota’s new computerised coupe are thin on the ground, but one thing is certain: if Toyota is planning a successor to the Supra, this concept has the right proportions.

If nothing else, it is known that Toyota is working with BMW on a new sports car platform, and high-ranked executives with the Japanese carmaker have spoken openly of hopes for a new Supra.

Reports in recent weeks suggest we could see just such a concept debut at next month’s Detroit Auto Show, so we may not have long to wait.

We’ve written about approximately 187,000 rumors about a return of the Toyota Supra to the land of living cars. There are a couple of good reasons for this: first, Toyota won’t stop dropping hints about a new halo sports car. Late this summer, Toyota sales guru Kazuo Ohara called a Supra successor “one of the options we have” – a comment followed by a hint that there would be “better news” on the subject in the future.

The second reason for all the Toyota tales is, of course, that we all have missed the Supra since its departure from the US market in 1998. So, when a member of the Autoblog team is party to a nudge-and-wink-filled conversation about a new Supra concept headed to January’s Detroit Auto Show, we tend to listen up.

A 400+ horsepower hybrid sports car would match up pretty well with the upcoming NSX.

Recently, a few very well-placed members of the Toyota team indicated to us, in not-so-cryptic terms, that the Japanese automaker is ready to shock the world with a Supra concept car for this year’s shindig in the Motor City. Further, the indications we’ve been given are that this “concept car” will signal broadly about a production version still to follow.

In 2007, the FT-HS concept (pictured) seemed like a perfectly promising Supra replacement, right before the economy fell off a cliff and everyone in the business shelved all non-essential product plans. This year, however, there’ll be about 16 million cars sold in the US and a 400+ horsepower hybrid sports car would match up pretty well with the upcoming Acura NSX from rival Honda, not to mention president Akio Toyoda’s mandate to shed his company’s staid image.

Of course, on the record, Toyota is still staying perfectly mum – not only on the topic of the previously rumored gas-electric powertrain, but on the existence of the concept itself. Our requests for any official confirmation have been met with firm retorts of approximately “no comment” from our friendly Toyota PR staffers.

Still, the pattern of executive-dropped clues about a new sports car follows that which composed the achingly long lead up to the eventual Toyota GT86/Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ. We’ll have to wait about a month to see just what Toyota has under the sheets in Cobo this year, but we’re crossing our fingers and hoping the new year brings with it a new Supra, at long last.

Video game Gran Turismo may have seeded a new Toyota Supra concept. And hopefully it will be presented in full scale metal like the Mercedes-Benz Vision Gran Turismo – which was presented at LA motor show last month as the first of several concepts sparked by a challenge from the game creators.

The Toyota version of the Vision Gran Turismo – teased only in a single image so far – shows profile proportions that would fit a Supra successor, and is bound to feed the fires of speculation around such a car, which is already rumoured to be scheduled for Detroit motor show in Janaury.

Toyota and BMW are collaborating on a new platform intended for sports cars, and a new Supra would seem a logical fit.

If so, it would pick up the enthusiasm for the Supra successor that was previewed in FT-HS concept form in 2007, but then dropped when the global financial crisis bit into economies around the world.

Put on your mystery-solvin’ pants, kids; we’ve got us a real enigma today. Like the Mercedes AMG Vision Gran Turismo, Toyota has reportedly come up with a crazy dream car concept for Gran Turismo 6. Supposedly, that’s it above, but it may be something more.

Today, French website AutoPlus and Motor Authority report that Toyota is teasing their version of the Vision Gran Turismo supercar. But like the Mercedes, an actual concept — or at least, a full-scale model — could be coming soon to an auto show near you, most likely the Detroit Auto Show next month.

We know that BMW and Toyota are working together to create a new sports car. What we don’t know is what form that collaboration will take.

And some people are already speculating that this could be the next Supra. Autoblog last week reported that a potential Toyota Supra successor will be making a surprise debut in Detroit, and we know Toyota and BMW are teaming up to make a new sports car. The last we heard, this car was going to be more of an LFA successor than a Supra. This teaser image is very clearly LFA-ish, too.

So we don’t know what the hell this car is yet. Maybe it will be just in a video game, maybe it will be a cool concept we’ll see next month, or maybe it will become a reality. We’ll see what happens next.

Gran Turismo 6, the latest version of the world’s best driving simulator game, launched worldwide last week. As well as including a TRD 86 Racing version of the GT86, Toyota committed to develop an exciting new sports car concept for the game that owners will be able to put through its paces.

Available as free downloadable content early in 2014, the collaboration between Toyota and developer Polyphony Digital forms part of the ambitious Vision Gran Turismo programme. Its purpose is to reward the franchise’s loyal fan-base with a unique window into the future of automotive design and celebrate 15 years of GT gaming history.

This is the only image available at the moment but any talk of Toyota and new sports cars always leads to speculation on the introduction of a spiritual successor to the Supra.

We never comment on speculation but it’s clear that there are familiar proportions in the shape of the silhouette…
