Noob Math/Calculator question

i think i just need to use the tables. probably no big deal

you can expand the natural log and exponential function using a power series or some other which can be done by hand or with a hand calc

true, but if he is asking this question it is probably beyond his means

ln(1+x) = x - x^2/2 + x^3/3 - x^4/4 + x^5/5 - x^6/6 + …

e^x = x + x^2/2! + x^3/3! + x^4/4! + x^5/5! + x^6/6! + …

i did all that shit in calc about 3 years ago. but noone including the math guys on here have a clear cut answer to my question. but like i said, i dont think i need to know anymore. i should be fine with the tables. i also took this course as a freshman like 3 years ago. both my calc and stats didnt transfer over though

Yeah you pretty much can’t solve a fractional exponent with a 4 function calculator.

Fractional exponents simplify to nth roots, not to any of those 4 functions.

3^4.6 = 3^4 * 3^0.6

= 333*3 * 3^0.6 - What SVTfocus didn’t follow up with is that it is really tough to get into a decimal without a calculator or some guess work.

yea i broke it down into better terms HOPING it would help, but going to roots/fractional exponents just ran the question into another circle

it sucks when you go through calc 1 2 3 using nothing but calculators then forget the reasoning behind the math

Simple answer:
no.

Bah that’s too much work.

The only way to do it is with a Log table or slide rule.

so…how’d the test go?

It was no mean a shot at you, it was one of those either you understand the complexity of it or you don’t. Teaching it over the internet forum is not exactly the best place to learn it.

no, i know man. no offense taken.

anyways, i’d be the first to admit i suck at math. HATE it. stats is easy, don’t mind that, but Calc… forget it

woo hooo…

got an A. and an A in the course :headbang:

there was a god damn fire alarm right in the middle of the exam. wtf. it screwed up my flow. anyone else at NSC yesterday when this happened?

Fuck you bill…Fuck you
