The problem comes from wanting to drive it for a while.
If you are hung up on that, the transit tag is going to be your best “get around” that isn’t going to land you in a ton of hot water unless you get pulled over multiple times with it.
If the vehicle is titled in florida you cannot get a NYS in-transit tag afaik. They are only meant for taking cars out of state or keeping them within the state.
If temp registration is what you want then It most likely has to be done in florida. If you are lucky its only a small fee and they are available for private sales. The only catch is that a FL temp registration is not exactly legal in other states.

ive done it… wasnt bad, got to drive my audi a4 around on NJ temp tags for 30 days before having to register it
