Physics Question: Fan + Sailboat?

watch the video clip posted earlier.
like the very first part of it.

Negative, fluid dynamics my friend, that is all. The fluid is air and the way that sail is shaped funnels the air out the sides and towards the back, therefore moving the boat forward. Different sail designs will yield different results.

now that you say that your right, and not to mention a real sail boat doesn’t only work with the sail, it has to have a keel as well, which the one in the video didn’t. Now that Ithat’s been throw into the equation I don’t think it would work.

^what the hell does a keel have to do with it?

:word:

a keel only keeps the boat from tipping over when wind is pushing the sail.

:banghead:

I’m just going to post in an epic thread.

Exactly. That youtube video is bullshit.

your wrong. (and yes i know that the sail is like a wing blah blah blah but thats not all of it.)

The keel or centerboard keeps the boat from being pushed sideways by the wind. The resistance from the hull and the keel translate the lifting force to forward motion.

the answer is fuck land im on a boat

Meh, there are nicer buildings, architecturally, but that is pretty bad ass. I want to visit Dubai someday.

This thing is pretty fuggin cool http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWSan2CMgos&feature=related

Interesting very interesting.

Just turn the fan backwards and turn it into a hover craft

when its already at a standstill?

:nerd:

to the keel retards…

totally irrelevant to this “test”

no, there would not be sufficient outside force to push the boat and break to friction of the water.

and have nothing but a leaf blower to blow into the sail. Do you move forward?
