Just put on one coat of clear, otherwise they will look too shiny and look like crap.
k well i ran around today like a retard looking for some adhesion promoter and i couldnt find it nor could i find the can of spray paint i wanted. so i finally just said screw it and i bought some sandpaper and truck/van/suv black paint. and a can of clear coat.
this is what i bought so far. will the truck/van/suv paint be ok? its not the “car” paint but w/e. its black and glossy, and i didnt want to get the specific rim paint because it isnt as glossy.
adhesion promoter on rims? I’ve only used it on interior bits. But Nappa carries it if your still looking.
yah, but im not doing the adhesion promoter way anymore, i got sick of looking for it. anywho do you guys think i will need to put on some primer on the rim after i sand off the clear coat? or is the stock paint on the rim or aluminum enough?
Sand it down, wipe it down and make sure there isn’t any dirt left on it, make sure it is CLEAN. Put on a couple coats of primer, make sure the first coat dry’s first. Primer is there to make the paint adheres to the rim.
not much progress yet, but i am following through with it. ive had alot of hw so i have only had time to sand 2 rims down completely. i left no clear coat on the rims at all i want the primer to stick straight to the rim so it doesnt flake off in the future. i dont have a hand sander so im doing it all by hand with 320 grit and take about 30 min per rim to get all the clear coat off.
pics of everything i have and have done so far.
todays updates.
i sanded another rim and took 2 min to outline the rims with cards so i dont get paint on the tires.
pics.
Just leave it like that with the cards. Looks cool.
lol cheap dish rims
k so i finally got the last rim sanded, they are completly ready to paint. i bagged the tires and got everything ready to go. so hopefully sat night after work i can get some primer on these…
woho… i finally got some primer on… they are actually black now…only needed 1 can too. did 3 light coats. the only problem i encountered was there was something wrong with the nozzle on the can so it constantly dripped paint & wasnt a nice spray which kinda messed me up, but nothing some sand paper can even out.
take a look so far… black looks good. and its only primer…
Now i got the black paint on, looks not bad, turned out good. all i need is a clear coat and im good to go.
Lookin good. Let that dry for a long while before you even touch it. Usually, you should do this in the summer warmth so it will dry faster.
haha yah, i actually used a hair dryer when i did it in the garage, so they dont get too cold and then they dry quicker. now i just have the fan on them in the basement, and tom ill put a clear coat on.
k so im completely done now…i posted some pics for those who were asking how the car paint on the rims would turn out so here you go.
let me know what you think of them.
they were dusty so i wiped them down with a wet rag. looks like i missed some dust but u get the idea.
very nice
Why the hell didn’t you paint the barrels?
because… i like the 2 tone. i might paint the inside a diff color so it sticks out. on the car you will hardly even see the inside anyways.
hmm my opion is done paint it a diff colour that would be a little to rice. i say do the rest black
im actually thinking of sanding them down again completely and repainting them with a gray primer so they are not as dark black… plus this time around ill try to get a better/smoother coat. i dunno ill have to see.
