Proper insulation in the attic

lots of money but certainly the best, as it also adds structure to the house. We’ve contracted this out on several of the jobs I’ve worked on. Sucks to do electrical in but other than that its great.

What size cavities were those, they kind of over filled in some spots I see :stuck_out_tongue:

6", and buying the installers pizza for lunch goes a long way.

X…

it looks like they only shaved the parts that would be drywalled? or is the pic b4 they were all done

You are right, that kneewall is where they stopped, and I added 6" of fiberglass insulation to those as well. :pimp:

X…

I don’t know about that. I ended up getting the work done with them. When I called before hand to ask about the price they told me “free no obligation”.

yea my windows are pretty bad. There from 1978 and w/o storm windows…i probably have some bad leaks

My house has blown in, it’s great. it’s about 19inch thick in the attic. Between that upgrade and others my electric bill in the hottest month in SC which is July was only $99. Not too shaby for a 5 bed 3 bath

then set the drop down box to “home performance with energy star”

If you do not want to use the company listed above this map will give you all the different ones in your area that do the same program as them.

Spending 4 - 5k on insulation in your attic is only cost effective if you live there for like 20 years. That is such a steep price for the gains you get >.<

I really need to look into a home energy audit. i know i need extra insulation up top. I have some other things that need to be taken care of first.

Yes, I know its about density…I wouldnt say completely wrong…:gotme:
2x4 framing = R13

2x6 framing = R19

The thing that will piss me off is not being able to craw around there freely and walk on the 2x6. If I add another 12"+ of unfaced roll or blown in. its going to be a PITA if I ever want to run some wries up there. If its rolls I gues I can pick them up and move them but i gotta cover myself up
If its blown in I can always swim through it and push it around. I believe that stuff is nontoxic and non itch too right?
I just know ill lose a tool or 2 up there…

Depot will install the blown in them selfs for .99sq/ft. If they do both my attics it will be around $700 :frowning:
Ill prob rent it myself

If you install the fiberglass insulation yourself do yourself a favor and cover yourself in baby powder. Works wonders

If you buy over a certian amount of the blown-in insulation, they throw the blower in for free. I’m doing my whole attic, and figured its going to cost me like $200-300 and a few hours labor to blow it all in with 2 or 3 people. 1 in the attic, and one feeding the blower.

I’ve got both mixed in my attic; and the Blown-in actually isn’t that bad to deal with; it’s non-toxic and a LOT less irritating to your skin than fiberglass. And running wires isn’t that hard… just push it to the side, run the wires, and push it back.

yea i think 20 bags and the blower is free.
what about near the soffit…you guys using the “egg carton” things to allow air travel through up into the attic.

one spot that mighy be a PITA is around my shower light. it says to keep clear 6" all the way around. light housing gets hot im sure. is the blown in flammable?

I don’t have soffit vents so I don’t have to worry about that; otherwise yea, i’d use some of those foam vent pieces down in that area.

Just dig out around the light after you get done blowing in that area.

I think the blown-in is treated with a chemical that makes it non-flamable, or at least flame-resistant.

Got this from HD site

Check this guy out. HAHA

Found this pretty interesting!

I think I might go this route

it would probably be a waste to take all the old insulation out and swap it with blown it
right?

Yea, I’d just go over the top and create a new “sealed” layer over all the old stuff.

put a 5 gallon bucket over it while you are blowing it in. Or some get a sheet of poster board and staple it into a tube and just leave it. I’m sure if you get a regular piece of poster board it will have a diameter of >12"
