question about 4wd

06 colorado:

I brought this truck into Paddock because the front wheels lock up while in reverse/4wd.

Of course I get the “It’s supposed to be like that”.

The tech said that on dry pavement the wheel will lock up because they are fighting each other, but only when you cut the wheel. And that this is normal.

My question is: Is this normal?

4wd on pavement will generally jump / skip through turns.

Lock up? As in drag the tires? No, not normal.

explain what you were doing in 4x4 so we have some context.

They will bind while turning, but not in a straight line.

AT LOW SPEEDS.

When powering two wheels simultaneously the wheels must be allowed to rotate at different speeds as the vehicle goes around curves. The problem is even more complicated when driving all four wheels. A design that fails to account for this will cause the vehicle to handle poorly on turns, fighting the driver as the tires slip and skid from the mismatched speeds.

Are they crow hopping? Front tires skipping. If so that’s normal for a part time 4x4 system when the wheels are turned on a dry surface.

And the tech is right, you don’t use 4x4 on dry pavement.

Yup; exactly as others have said. My Blazer does that in 4wd; perfectly normal on dry pavement.

ONLY when the wheels are turned though, not straight. It’s completely normal, and avoidable.

When conditions demand 4wd, you shouldn’t be over dry pavement, or if you are (pulling something), your wheels should be stright anyways.

Crow hop is normal. I drive or ride in a vehicle and experience crow hop almost weekly. Sometimes every day. Usually you can get the suspension to bind up a little. It will make the vehicle sit off kilter a little. It may be hard to get out of 4wd if you bind it up. You may move the lever or switch back to 2H but it may take a while to actually disengage.

If it doesn’t crow hop, then you have a problem.

I’m not familiar with the Isuzu transfercase in that vehicle otherwise I may have more insight.
